It is said that Nabi Dawood ‘Alayhis Salaam had ninety-nine wives. Nabi Dawood ‘Alayhis Salaam then saw another female and wanted to make her his wife. However, prior to this, another believer had already sent a proposal to this female. When the family of this female received the proposal of Nabi Daud ‘Alayhis Salaam, how could they even refuse? Nabi Daud ‘Alayhis Salaam then married this female.

Bear in mind that in those days, this was not unusual and also not against the Shari’ah Law of that period. However, this was something which was against the norm for a Prophet. Thereafter, Allah azza wajal sent a message to Nabi Dawood ‘Alayhis Salaam to address this issue.

Two Angels appeared to him in human form. Both of them laid claim to the same thing. Instead of entering through the door, they entered through the wall of the Masjid. He was disturbed when he saw this. They told him that he should not be afraid as they had an important case in which they required his decision. They also asked him to show them the correct path. One of them said, “This is my brother. He has ninety-nine sheep and I only have one. Now he says that I should hand over this one single sheep to him and even forcing me to do this.”

When Nabi Dawood ‘Alayhis Salaam heard this, he immediately said that this was totally unfair and that this person wants to take away his one single sheep and join it with his numerous other sheep. Nabi Dawood ‘Alayhis Salaam declared that it was an unfair claim. Nabi Dawood ‘Alayhis Salaam also realized that this case was actually a test for himself. He then fell into Sajdah and sought the Divine Pardon of Allah azza wajal.

This entire incident is mentioned in Surah Saad.

There is no doubt that the status of the Prophets are indeed very lofty. If there is a slightest possibility of any mistake, they are immediately warned and cautioned. When this warning or lesson comes from Allah azza wajal, they immediately fall into Sajdah seeking His Divine Pardon. There is a famous saying that the deeds of the pious are sometimes actually the faults of the close servants of Allah azza wajal. In other words, they have set such a high standard in their obedience to Allah azza wajal that normal individuals cannot compete with this.
