Hazrat Sulaiman – peace be upon Him – had 99 wives.  Once, he said that he will visit all his wives one night and each will bear a child, and all those children will make Jihaad on horses in Allah’s path but while he was saying all this, he did not say, “InshaAllah”, most probably, due to being busy in some endeavours that he did not remember it.

The effect of abandoning inshaAllah was such that only one woman fell pregnant and that too, was born deformed.

The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon Him – stated:

“Had Hazrat Sulaiman – peace be upon Him – said “InshaAllah” all those women would have borne children and they would make Jihaad in Allah’s path.”

(Bukhari, Kitaab Al-Jihaad, Vol. 4, p. 22, Hadeeth No. 2819)

Allah Almighty has briefly mentioned this incident in the Holy Quran in the following manner:

وَلَقَدْ فَتَنَّا سُلَیۡمٰنَ وَ اَلْقَیۡنَا عَلٰی کُرْسِیِّہٖ جَسَدًا ثُمَّ اَنَابَ ﴿۳۴﴾

And undoubtedly, We tested Sulaiman and placed on his throne a lifeless body, then he turned and repented.

He said, ‘O my Lord’ forgive me, and bestow me a Kingdom which may not suit to anyone else after me. Undoubtedly, You are the Big Bestower.

(Saad 38, Verse 34-35)

Lesson:

There is a lesson in this Quranic incident that it is necessary for a Muslim to say “InshaAllah” for whatever he plans on doing in future, and through the virtues of these blessed words it is expected to come to completion while abandoning “InshaAllah” results in a total loss and deprivation.

It’s worth paying attention that Hazrat Sulaiman – peace be upon Him – who is a great Nabi of Allah Almighty and a great king as well but when he forgetfully did not say “InshaAllah” then the great form of piety he had intended from it was not realized and on this, he turned to Allah Almighty in a very sad and sorrowful state and sought forgiveness then where do we, the sinners, stand a chance?  If we were to abandon InshaAllah then how can we succeed in our endeavours?  Thus, to say InshaAllah should always be a priority because Allah Almighty has instructed our beloved Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon Him – in the Holy Quran with great emphasis to say InshaAllah Ta’ala before commencing any future endeavours.

Hence, Allah Almighty commands His beloved Messenger – may Allah send peace and blessings upon Him – as follows:

وَلَا تَقُوۡلَنَّ لِشَایۡءٍ اِنِّیۡ فَاعِلٌ ذٰلِکَ غَدًا ﴿ۙ۲۳﴾

And never say anything, that I will do this tomorrow.
اِلَّا اَنۡ یَّشَآءَ اللہُ ۫ وَاذْکُرۡ رَّبَّکَ اِذَا نَسِیۡتَ

But only if Allah Wills, and remember your Lord when you forget.

(Al-Kahf 18, Verse 23-24)
