The people of Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jama’ah have recently been manipulated by some so-called scholars that saying “Ya RasoolAllah” is not permissible, Haraam and some even, Allah forbid!, say that it’s kufr and shirk.

Below are some proofs to empower our Sunni brothers and to ensure they know where they stand as a Sunni and a righteous Muslim, inshaAllah.

It is the belief of Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jama’ah that calling anyone other than Allah is correct and permissible and that the Ummah has been practicing it.  To regard it as Kufr is wrong.

Proof # 1 (from the Noble Sahaba – RadiyAllahu Anhum):

Imam Muhammad Zarqaani Ibn Abdul Baaqi writes:

It has been recorded about a group of Sahaba that they used to say, “O the Messenger of Allah, may Allah send benediction upon you”.

(Zarqaani ‘Alal Mawaahib Vol. 6, p. 331)

Proof # 2 (from the Noble Sahaba – RadiyAllahu Anhum):

Hazrat Mulla Ali Qaari – Rahimahullah – wrote about two Sahaba; 1) Hazrat Miqdaad and 2) Hazrat Ka’b – may Allah be pleased with them – the following:

Whenever they entered the Mosque they used to say, “Peace and Blessings be upon you, O the Messenger of Allah”.

(Sharah Al-Shifa Vol. 3, p. 275)

Proof # 3 (from a great Sahaabi):

Imam Azam Abu Hanifah has narrated from Ibn ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with them – that he said:

“It is Sunnah to visit the grave of the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – from the Qiblah direction facing the back towards the Qiblah and keeping the face in the direction of the grave and then say ‘AsSalaamo ‘Alaika Ayyuhan Nabiyyul Kareem (Peace be upon You, O the honorable Prophet)’.”

(Wafa Al-Wafa Vol. 2, p. 434)

Proof # 4 (from Imam Azam – Rahimahullah):

It is mentioned in the “Qaseedah of Imam Azam” as follows:

O the leader of leaders, I have come to you with the intention of

Seeking your pleasure and pursuing your support

By Allah, O the best amongst the creation indeed I have the heart

That longs for none besides you.

Proof # 5 (from Imam Azam – Rahimahullah):

He stated in Qaseedah Al-No’maan the following:

May Allah send benedictions upon you, O the symbol of guidance

(Qaseedah Al-No’maan p. 111)

Proof # 6 (from Great Classical Fiqh Books):

The following wordings of Salaam are recommended in Maraaqi Al-Falaah when visiting the Mubaarak Rauza of the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him:

Peace be upon you, O my Master, O the Messenger of Allah

Peace be upon you, O the Prophet of Allah

Peace be upon you, O the beloved of Allah

Peace be upon you, O the Prophet of mercy

Peace be upon you, O the Intercessor of the Ummah

Peace be upon you, O the leader of all the Messengers

(Maraaqi Al-Falaah p. 432)

Proof # 7 (from Fatawa Alamgiri):

It is mentioned in Fatawa Alamgiri as follows:

Peace be upon you, O the Messenger of Allah from (name) who is seeking your intercession in the court of your Lord, so please intercede for him and for all the Muslims.

Proof # 8 – permissibility of saying “Ya Shaykh Abd Al-Qadir Shai’al Lillah” (from Fatawa Khayriyah):

Allamah Khairuddeen Ramli, the teacher of Allamah Alauddeen Haskafi, the author of Al-Durr Al-Mukhtar, writes in his Fatawa Khairiyah as follows:

“O Shaykh Abdul Qadir” is a call, and when “Shai’al Lillah” is joined with it then it means “to seek something through the sake of Allah’s honor”, so what is the reason for its prohibition?!

(Fatawa Khayriyah Egyptian Edition Vol. 2, p. 182)

Proof # 9 (from Hazrat Shams Tabrez – Rahimahullah):

Hazrat Shams Tabrez states:

O Allah’s Messenger, you are the beloved of the Only Creator

You are the honorable servant of the pure Lord and you are unparalleled

Proof # 10 (from the Mujaddid & Muhaqqiq Dehlawi – Rahimahullah):

Shaykh Abul Haq Muhaddith Dehlavi writes in his famous Akhbar Al-Akhyaar:

I have been destroyed in the sorrow of being distant from your beauty

Please have mercy on this poor soul by showing your splendor

Have mercy, O Allah’s Messenger, in any form

Have mercy on this (spiritually) bankrupt (person)

(Akhbaar Al-akhyaar p. 323)
