Short Biography:

He was a great Muhaddith and Mufassir.  His epithet is Muhiy Al-Sunnah.  He studied Hadeeth and Fiqh from Qaadi Husain.  He was very pious and a great servant of Allah.  He passed away in the year 510 A.H. at the age of 80 and was buried next to his teacher Qaadi Husain.

Imam Taaj Al-Deen Subki wrote:

“Imam Baghwi was a great ‘Aalim of Tafseer, Fiqh and Hadeeth and strived hard in learning and spreading the teachings of Hadeeth.”

Ma’aalim Al-Tanzeel:

Haaji Khaleefa wrote the following in Kash Al-Zunoon:

“The Tafseer Ma’aalim Al-Tanzeel of Imam Muhiy Al-Sunnah Baghwi is a moderate Tafseer manual.  He compiled the Ahadeeth, the quotations of the Sahaba and Taabe’een in this book.  Shaykh Taaj Al-Deen Husaini D. 875 has written an abridged version of it.  The famous Mufassir Imam Khaazin wrote in the introduction of his Tafseeer that Ma’aalim Al-Tanzeel is a great and valuable book and contains Sahih Ahadeeth and quotations, and adorned with the Shariah laws.  The wonderful incidents of the past are also mentioned in the book and the style of writing is beautiful.

The Tafseer mainly focuses on the easy and concise Tafseer of Quran.  When quoting the sayings of the Sahaba and other pious predecessors he does not mention the chain, because he mentioned all his chains of narrators from whom he takes the Ahadeeth in the beginning of the book.

Ma’aalim Al-Tanzeel has also been published on the footnotes of Tafseer Ibn Katheer and Tafseer Khaazin in Egypt.
