Allah Almighty states in the Holy Quran:

یٰۤاَیُّہَا الرُّسُلُ کُلُوۡا مِنَ الطَّیِّبٰتِ وَ اعْمَلُوۡا صٰلِحًا ؕ اِنِّیۡ بِمَا تَعْمَلُوۡنَ عَلِیۡمٌ ﴿ؕ۵۱﴾

‘O Messengers, eat pure things and do good deeds. I know your deeds.

(Al-Mu’minoon 23, Verse 51)

Tafseer:

It is addressed to all the Prophets and their nations that they should eat Halaal and do good deeds. Some Mufassireen have stated that it refers to the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – alone which unfolds that all the attributes and qualities the other Prophets had they all are in the possession of the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him.

You alone have all the qualities that all the other pious possess

It is mentioned in Mathnavi Shareef as follows:

علم و حکمت زاید از لقمہ حلال

عشق و رقت آید از لقمہ حلال

Intellect and wisdom is enlightened with a Halaal morsel

True love and tenderness of heart also comes with a Halaal morsel

When you notice a consistent increase in envy, ignorance and negligence due to the morsel you consume

Then consider that morsel as Haraam

If you sow wheat it will not produce barley

Have you ever seen a horse giving birth to a donkey?

The food is a seed and its products are thoughts

Food is an ocean and its pearls are the good thoughts

When you put a Halaal morsel in your mouth

It creates a sense of slavery of Allah Almighty and thought of the hereafter.

Hadeeth:

Undoubtedly Allah is pure and He does not accept anything expect what’s pure.

It is said that if the morsel that is consumed is not Halaal

Then one is misled due to it

Like when the water itself is not clean

Its pearl also does not come out clean

Shaddaad’s sister presented a bowl of milk to a Prophet – peace be upon him – of her time but he, despite keeping that day’s fast, denied to accept it. Upon her persistent request to give her a reason for refusing, he asked her, “Where did you bring it from?” She replied, “It’s the milk of my own goat” but he still refused to drink, and again upon her tireless request for clarity, he asked, “Where did the goat come from?” She replied, “I bought her myself, from my own money.” When he was totally convinced then only he drank the milk. Shaddaad’s sister again wanted a reason for such strict behaviour after which he replied, “The Prophets are commanded to eat Halaal foods and to do good.”

Imam Ghazali – may Allah be pleased with him – writes:

“One whose apparent character is sound then it’s not necessary for you to question the acceptance of his Salah and fasts, and you may, of course, receive gifts from such individuals without having to engage into any arguments. If you say that the current era is such that often people’s earnings are Haraam then this too is just a suspicion, and Muslims are prevented from having suspicion about Muslims but they are rather commanded to have good thoughts about them.”

Abul Farj Ibn Al-Jawzy states:

“The thought of Halaal can also stain the hearts. If such is the state of Halaal then what would be the effect of Haraam on the heart?”

(Tafseer Roohul Bayaan Vol. 18; Suran 23, Verse 51, p. 63-66)

Hazrat Abu Hurairah – may Allah be pleased with him – narrated that the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – has stated:

“If one of you were to rather shove sand in your mouth then it would still be better than putting a morsel in his mouth which Allah Almighty has declared Haraam.”
