اَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ الْاَرْضَ مِہٰدًا ۙ﴿۶﴾
Have We not made the earth a bed,
وَّ
الْجِبَالَ اَوْتَادًا ﴿۪ۙ۷﴾
And the mountains as stakes?
وَّ
خَلَقْنٰکُمْ اَزْوٰجًا ۙ﴿۸﴾
And We have made you pairs,
وَّ جَعَلْنَا نَوْمَکُمْ سُبَاتًا ۙ﴿۹﴾
And We have made your sleep a rest,
وَّ
جَعَلْنَا الَّیۡلَ لِبَاسًا ﴿ۙ۱۰﴾
And We have made the night a covering.
وَّ
جَعَلْنَا النَّہَارَ مَعَاشًا ﴿۪۱۱﴾
And We have made the day for seeking livelihood.
وَّ بَنَیۡنَا فَوْقَکُمْ سَبْعًا شِدَادًا ﴿ۙ۱۲﴾
And We have built over you seven strong layers (firmaments).
وَّ
جَعَلْنَا سِرَاجًا وَّ ہَّاجًا ﴿۪ۙ۱۳﴾
And We have set therein a very bright lamp.
وَّ
اَنۡزَلْنَا مِنَ الْمُعْصِرٰتِ مَآءً ثَجَّاجًا ﴿ۙ۱۴﴾
And We sent down then from the clouds water pouring forcefully.
لِّنُخْرِجَ بِہٖ حَبًّا وَّ نَبَاتًا ﴿ۙ۱۵﴾
That We may bring forth therewith grains and vegetables.
وَّ
جَنّٰتٍ اَلْفَافًا ﴿ؕ۱۶﴾
And thick gardens.
Tafsir al-Durr al-Manthoor تفسیر الدر المنثور
وَأخرج الْحَاكِم وَصَححهُ عَن ابْن عَبَّاس قَالَ: لما أَرَادَ الله أَن يخلق الْخلق أرسل الرّيح فنسفت المَاء حَتَّى أبدت عَن حَشَفَة وَهِي الَّتِي تَحت الْكَعْبَة ثمَّ مد الأَرْض حَتَّى بلغت مَا شَاءَ الله من الطول وَالْعرض وَكَانَت هَكَذَا تميد فَجعل الله الْجبَال رواسي أوتاداً فَكَانَ أَبُو قبيس من أول جبل وضع فِي الأَرْض
Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them – is reported to have said: When Allah Almighty ordained to create the creation, He sent the wind which erupted the water until an island appeared which is the part that is beneath the Holy Ka’bah. He then expanded the earth until it reached to the width and length that Allah Almighty ordained. It continued to expand in this manner. Allah Almighty then created the mountains like anchoring pegs, so Abu Qubais mountain range was the first mountain to be created on the earth.
وَأخرج ابْن الْمُنْذر عَن الْحسن قَالَ: إِن الأَرْض أول مَا خلقت خلقت من عِنْد بَيت الْمُقَدّس وضعت طِينَة فَقيل لَهَا: اذهبي هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وخلقت على صَخْرَة والصخرة على حوت والحوت على المَاء فَأَصْبَحت وَهِي تميع
فَقَالَت الْمَلَائِكَة: يَا رب من يسكن هَذِه
فَأَصْبَحت الْجبَال فِيهَا أوتاداً
فَقَالَت الْمَلَائِكَة: يَا رب أخلقت خلقا هُوَ أَشد من هَذِه قَالَ: الْحَدِيد
قَالُوا: فخلقت خلقا هُوَ أَشد من الْحَدِيد قَالَ: النَّار
قَالُوا: فخلقت خلقا هُوَ أَشد من النَّار قَالَ: المَاء
قَالُوا: فخلقت خلقا هُوَ أَشد من المَاء قَالَ الرّيح
قَالُوا: فخلقت خلقا هُوَ أَشد من الرّيح قَالَ: الْبناء
قَالُوا: فخلقت خلقا هُوَ أَشد من الْبناء قَالَ: آدم
Sayyiduna Hasan – may Allah be pleased with him – is reported to have said: Indeed the first portion of the earth was created near Bait al-Maqdis, its clay form was then commanded to go in certain directions. It was placed over a rock, and the rock was placed on a fish, and the fish on water. When the morning grew it was floating on water.
The angels then said: Who will make it stationary, O our Lord?
Allah Almighty then staked mountains in it.
The angels then asked: Did you create a creation tougher than this, O our Lord?
Allah Almighty replied: It’s the Iron.
They asked: Have you created anything more powerful than the iron?
He replied: It’s the fire.
They asked: Have you created anything more powerful than the fire?
He replied: It’s the water.
They asked: Have you created anything more powerful than the water?
He replied: It’s the wind.
They asked: Have you created anything more powerful than the wind?
He replied: It’s the foundation.
They asked: Have you created anything more powerful than the foundation?
He replied: He is Adam (peace be upon him).

Tafsir Rooh al-Bayaan تفسیر روح البیان
الأوتاد على الحقيقة سادات الأولياء وخواص الأصفياء فانهم جبال ثابتة وبهم تثبت ارض الوجود
In reality, Autad are the dignitaries amongst Awliya and chosen Sufis. They are indeed the mountains through whom the earth’s existence is stabilized.
وسئل أبو سعيد الخراز قدس سره عن الأوتاد والابدال أیهم أفضل
فقال الأوتاد
قيل كيف
فقال لان الابدال يتقلبون من حال الى حال ويبدل بهم من مقام الى مقام والأوتاد بلغ بهم النهاية وثبت اركانهم فهم الذين بهم قوام الخلق
Imam Abu Sa’eed – may Allah sanctify his secrets – was asked regarding Autad and Abdal; as to who amongst them is superior.
He replied: The Autad.
He was then asked: How could it be?
He replied: It is because the Abdal keep changing from one state to the other and from one station to another whereas the Autad have reached the destination and their Arkan is established and the existence of the creation depends on them.
قال ابن عطاء الأوتاد هم اهل الاستقامة والصدق لا تغيرهم الأحوال وهم فى مقام التمكين انتهى
والأوتاد أربعة واحد يحفظ الشرق يقال له عبد الحي وواحد يحفظ الغرب يقال له عبد العليم وواحد يحفظ الشمال يقال له عبد المريد وواحد يحفظ الجنوب يقال له عبد القادر
والابدال سبعة يحفظون أقاليم الكرة علوا وسفلا.
Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Ata – may Allah be pleased with him – said:
Autad are the people of steadfastness and truth. Change of situations/time does not affect them. They are in a state of completion.
The Autad are four:
There are seven Abdals who protect the upper and lower domains of the seven regions of the earth’s sphere.
