May man be slain – how ungrateful he is!
From what did He create him?
He created him by a drop of water, then proportioned him.
Then He made his way easy for him.
Then He gave him death and caused him to be buried.
Then when He pleased, brought him out.
Nothing, he has not carried out what he was commanded.
Therefore let man look at his food.
That We poured down water abundantly.
Then We cleaved the earth well.
Then We caused to grow therein grain,
And grapes and green fodder.
And the olive and the date palm.
And thick gardens.
And fruits and grasses;
For your benefit and for your cattle.
Tafsir al-Qurtubi
Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas – may Allah be pleased with him – said: It was revealed about ‘Utabah ibn Abi Lahab who had brought Iman but rejected faith when Surah Al-Najm was revealed, and said, “I believe in the entire Quran except Surah Al-Najm”. Allah Almighty then revealed, “May man (‘Utabah) be slain (be cursed) – how ungrateful he is! (for he rejected faith in the Quran).
The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – cursed him and said, “Oh Allah, appoint one of Your dogs upon him.” He immediately left for Syria to conduct business. When he reached Al-Ghadhirah, he remembered the curse of the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him. He struck a deal with his companion that he would give him a thousand gold coins if he wakes up alive tomorrow. They kept him in the middle of the caravan and kept the luggage around him. When they were still at it, a lion came and as he got closer to the group it leaped and jumped until it was on top of him and then ripped him apart. His father was mourning and weeping as he said, “Whenever (Sayyiduna) Muhammad says anything it definitely happens.”
Sayyiduna Abu Bakr ibn Tahir – may Allah be pleased with him – said: He made it easy for everyone whatever they were created for and destined it for them. Its proof is the Hadeeth of the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him:
Do work, for every work has been simplified for whomever it was meant.
Hadeeth: You were created from seven, sustained by seven, so make Sajdah to Allah on seven.

Tafsir al-Jalalain
Perish man!, accursed be the disbeliever! What has made him ungrateful? what has driven him to disbelief?
From what thing has He created him? (an interrogative meant as an affirmative, which He then explains by saying):
From a drop of sperm did He create him then proportion him, [in stages] as a blood-clot, then an embryo up to the last [stage] of his creation.
{ثُمَّ السَّبِيل} أَيْ طَرِيق خُرُوجه مِنْ بَطْن أمه {يسره}
Then He made the way, his exit from his mother’s belly, easy for him;
then He causes him to die and buries him, He places him in a grave that hides him;
Then, when He wills, He will raise him, for the Resurrection.
No indeed! Verily, he has not accomplished, he has not done, what He, his Lord, commanded him, to [do].
So let man consider, in reflection, his food, how it is determined and procured for him:
{أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا الْمَاء} مِنْ السَّحَاب {صَبًّا}
That
We pour down water, from the clouds, plenteously;
{ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا الْأَرْض} بِالنَّبَاتِ {شَقًّا}
Then We split the earth into fissures, with vegetation,
And cause the grains, such as wheat and barley, to grow therein,
{وَعِنَبًا وَقَضْبًا}
And vines and herbs,
{وزيتونا ونخلا}
And olives and date-palms,
And gardens of dense foliage, orchards teeming with trees,
And
fruits and pastures (abb is what cattle graze; it is also said to be ‘straw’),
As sustenance for you and your flocks (also as [explained] above).
