Allah Almighty states in the Holy Quran:
‘O believers! be patient, and excel in patience with the enemies.
(Aale ‘Imran 3, Verse 200)
Sayyiduna Ibn `Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them reported:
‘Uyaina bin Hisn bin Hudhaifa came and stayed with his nephew Al-Hurr bin Qais who was one of those whom Sayyiduna `Umar used to keep near him, as the Qurra’ (learned men knowing Qur’an by heart) were the people of Sayyiduna `Umar’s meetings and his advisors whether they were old or young. ‘Uyaina said to his nephew, “O son of my brother! You have an approach to this chief, so get for me the permission to see him.” Al-Hurr said, “I will get the permission for you to see him.” So Al-Hurr asked the permission for ‘Uyaina and Sayyiduna `Umar admitted him. When ‘Uyaina entered upon him, he said, “Beware! O the son of Al-Khattab! By Allah, you neither give us sufficient provision nor judge among us with justice.” Thereupon `Umar became so furious that he intended to harm him, but Al-Hurr said, “O Leader of the Believers! Allah said to His Prophet:
Adopt forgiveness and bid to good and turn away from the Ignorant.
(Al-A’raf 7, Verse 199)
And this (i.e. ‘Uyaina) is one of the foolish.” By Allah, Sayyiduna `Umar did not overlook that Verse when Al-Hurr recited it before him; he observed (the orders of) Allah’s Book strictly.
When Sayyiduna ‘Umar Listened to the Quran in a State of Anger, it Transformed His Heart from the Fire of Kufr to the Light Islam:
Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas May Allah have mercy upon him explains the manner in which Hadrat Sayyiduna Umar May Allah have mercy upon him accepted Islam. Hadrat Sayyiduna Umar May Allah have mercy upon him explained, “One day someone informed me that my sister and brother in law had accepted Islam. There was no controlling my anger. I then went to their house and heard something being recited. I then banged the door and when I entered, I demanded to know what they were reading. I then began to beat them until even my brother in law fell to the ground.
However, my sister grabbed me from behind and when I saw the blood all around, I began to feel a little ashamed. I then asked them to read the words which they were reading earlier. My sister mentioned that I should first make proper ghusal and after doing this, I was allowed to listen to the Quran. My sister then began to recite verses 1 to 15 from Surah Taha:
‘O beloved! We sent not this Quran upon you that you may be put to trouble.
Yes, as an admonition to him who fears.
A sent down by Him Who has made the earth and the high heavens.
He, the Most Affectionate, established on the Throne (Befitting to His Dignity).
His is whatever is in heavens and whatever is in earth and whatever is in between and whatever is beneath the wet soil.
And if you speak the word loudly, then He knows the secret and that which is more hidden than this.
Allah-none to be worshipped but He. His are all good names.
And has there come to you the story of Musa?
When he saw a fire, then said to his wife, ‘Stay, I have seen a fire, haply I may bring for you a brand of fire or find a way at the fire.
Then when he came to the fire, a call was made, O Musa!
Verily, I am your Lord, then take off your shoes, undoubtedly, you are in the sacred valley Tuwa.
And l have chosen you, now listen carefully to what is revealed to you.
Verily I am Allah there is none to be worshipped save me. So worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance.
Undoubtedly, the Hour is to come. It was near that I should conceal it from all, that every soul may be recompensed for its endeavor.
He mentions that there were also a few verses after this which was recited. He also mentions that the words of the Quran was so awe inspiring that it completely transformed his heart. I then asked, “Are these the words from which the Quraish run?” He further explains that after this, the Almighty expanded his chest for the acceptance of Islam.
Tolerance is the Remedy of Many Things:
A wise man had an ill-mannered wife. Once when of his friends came to visit him and the food was served. The wife of this wiseman began to swear her husband and took the food away that was kept in front of them. His friend was enraged by this. Hence, in a state of anger, he left at one. The wise man persuaded him and said to him, “Do you not remember the day when I was having a meal at your house and all of a sudden a chicken dropped onto the food table and ruined all the food, but I still did not show any sign of anger.”
His friend then said, “Yes, it is true that it happened that day as you said.”
The wise man then added, “Just take the action of my wife’s as the mischief of the chicken.”
When he heard this, his anger has cooled down and he returned with his friend and remarked, “Tolerance is the remedy of many things.”
(Ihya Uloom al-Deen Vol. 3, p. 221)
Once someone hit a wise man on his foot and injured him which caused him a great deal of pain but he did not get upset at him. When he was asked for his reasons behind it, he responded:
I just imagined I slipped on a rock. This thought immediately diminished my anger.”
(Ihya Uloom al-Deen Vol. 3, p. 221)
A Piece of Paper:
It is narrated about a king of Bani Israel that he had a wise man (among his courtiers). Whenever the king got angry, he would pass a piece of paper to him which bearing these words:
Have mercy on the poor and fear your death, and remember your hereafter.
Whenever the king read it his anger would cool down.
(Ihya Uloom al-Deen Vol. 3, p. 214)
- The more pious a person is the more Allah Almighty instills the quality of tolerance and endurance in him.
- One should keep some arrangements of anger management in order to deal with his anger when he is enraged at some point.
- One who is merciful to Allah’s Creation, Allah showers His Mercy upon him.
