ہَلْ اَتٰىکَ حَدِیۡثُ الْجُنُوۡدِ ﴿ۙ۱۷﴾

  Have the words of the hosts come to you? 


 فِرْعَوْنَ وَ ثَمُوۡدَ ﴿ؕ۱۸﴾

  Which hosts? of Firawn (Pharoah) and Thamud.


 بَلِ الَّذِیۡنَ کَفَرُوۡا فِیۡ تَکْذِیۡبٍ ﴿ۙ۱۹﴾

  But rather the infidels are busy in belying.


وَّ اللہُ مِنۡ وَّ رَآئِہِمۡ مُّحِیۡطٌ ﴿ۚ۲۰﴾

  And Allah has encompassed them from behind.


 بَلْ ہُوَ قُرْاٰنٌ مَّجِیۡدٌ ﴿ۙ۲۱﴾

  But it is a glorious Quran.


 فِیۡ لَوْحٍ مَّحْفُوۡظٍ ﴿٪۲۲﴾

  In well guarded tablet.

Tafsir al-Baghawi                                                     تفسیر البغوی                            

عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: إِنَّ فِي صَدْرِ اللَّوْحِ: لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ، دِينُهُ الْإِسْلَامُ، وَمُحَمَّدٌ عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ، فَمَنْ آمَنَ بِاللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَصَدَّقَ بِوَعْدِهِ وَاتَّبَعَ رُسُلَهُ أَدْخَلَهُ

Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas – may Allah be pleased with him – is reported to have said:  It is written in the heart of the tablet, “There is none worthy of worship but Allah alone.  His Religion is Islam.  Sayyiduna Muhammad – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – is His slave and Messenger.  Whoever believes in Allah Almighty and believes in His Promise and follows his Messenger, He shall enter him in Paradise.

Tafsir al-Kabeer                                                                                                             التفسیر الکبیر                        

كَانُوا فِي بِلَادِ الْعَرَبِ، وَقِصَّتُهُمْ عِنْدَهُمْ مَشْهُورَةٌ فَذَكَرَ تَعَالَى مِنَ الْمُتَأَخِّرِينَ فِرْعَوْنَ، وَمِنَ الْمُتَقَدِّمِينَ ثَمُودَ، وَالْمَقْصُودُ بَيَانُ أَنَّ حَالَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ مَعَ الْكُفَّارِ فِي جَمِيعِ الْأَزْمِنَةِ مُسْتَمِرَّةٌ عَلَى هَذَا النَّهْجِ

(Pharaoh and Thamood) were from the Arab region and their story is famous among them.  Hence Allah Almighty mentioned Pharaoh amongst the latter ones and Thamood amongst the predecessors.  The aim is to mention the situation of believers in the hands of disbelievers in every era that it has been similarly consistent.

{هَلْ أَتَاك} يَا مُحَمَّد {حَدِيث الْجُنُود}

{فِرْعَوْن وَثَمُود} وَاسْتُغْنِيَ بِذِكْرِ فِرْعَوْن عَنْ أَتْبَاعه وَحَدِيثهمْ أَنَّهُمْ أُهْلِكُوا بِكُفْرِهِمْ وَهَذَا تَنْبِيه لِمَنْ كَفَرَ بِالنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَالْقُرْآن لِيَتَّعِظُوا

{بَلْ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا فِي تَكْذِيب} بِمَا ذُكِرَ

{وَاَللَّه مِنْ وَرَائِهِمْ مُحِيط} لَا عَاصِم لَهُمْ منه

{بَلْ هُوَ قُرْآن مَجِيد} عَظِيم

{فِي لَوْح} هُوَ فِي الْهَوَاء فَوْق السَّمَاء السَّابِعَة {مَحْفُوظ} بِالْجَرِّ مِنْ الشَّيَاطِين وَمِنْ تَغْيِير شَيْء مِنْهُ طُوله مَا بَيْن السَّمَاء وَالْأَرْض وعرضه ما بين المشرق والمغرب وهو من درة بيضاء قاله بن عباس رضي الله عنهما

Have you, O Muhammad, received the story of the hosts?

Pharaoh and Thamood? the mention of ‘Pharaoh’ suffices to also include his followers; their ‘story’ is that they were destroyed for their disbelief, and this is meant as a warning for those who deny the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – and the Quran, that they may be admonished [thereby].

Nay, but the disbelievers are [engrossed] in denial, of the mentioned;

And Allah is behind them, All-Encompassing — they have no protector against Him.

Nay, but it is a glorious, a magnificent, Quran

In a tablet, suspended above the seventh heaven, preserved from all devils and from having any of its contents altered; it is a high as the distance between the earth and the heaven, and as wide as the distance between the east and the west, made of white pearls — as stated by Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas – may Allah be pleased with both.
