وَ اِلَی الْجِبَالِ کَیۡفَ نُصِبَتْ ﴿ٝ۱۹﴾

And the mountains – how they have been established?

Tafsir al-Qurtubi                                                                                                                                                                                      تفسیر القرطبی                                                    

أَيْ كَيْفَ نُصِبَتْ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ، بِحَيْثُ لَا تَزُولُ، وَذَلِكَ أَنَّ الْأَرْضَ لَمَّا دُحِيَتْ مَادَتْ، فَأَرْسَاهَا بِالْجِبَالِ. كَمَا قَالَ: وَجَعَلْنا فِي الْأَرْضِ رَواسِيَ أَنْ تَمِيدَ بِهِمْ  [الأنبياء: 31].

i.e. how they have been established on earth – that they do not fall.  It is due to the fact that when the earth was laid out it began to sway to one side then it was stabilized through the mountains.  As the Almighty has stated as follows:

وَجَعَلْنا فِي الْأَرْضِ رَواسِيَ أَنْ تَمِيدَ بِهِمْ

And We put anchors in the earth lest it should move away with them.

(Al-Ambiya 21, Verse 31)
