بَلْ تُؤْثِرُوۡنَ الْحَیٰوۃَ الدُّنْیَا﴿۱۶﴾۫ۖ
But rather you prefer the life of this world!
Tafsir al-Qurtubi تفسیر القرطبی
وَعَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ أَنَّهُ قَرَأَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ، فَقَالَ: أَتَدْرُونَ لِمَ آثَرْنَا الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا عَلَى الْآخِرَةِ لِأَنَّ الدُّنْيَا حَضَرَتْ وَعُجِّلَتْ لَنَا طَيِّبَاتُهَا وَطَعَامُهَا وَشَرَابُهَا، وَلِذَاتُهَا وَبَهْجَتُهَا، وَالْآخِرَةَ غُيِّبَتْ عَنَّا، فَأَخَذْنَا الْعَاجِلَ، وَتَرَكْنَا الْآجِلَ.
It is reported that Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ood – may Allah be pleased with him – recited this verse and said, “Do you know as to why we give precedence to the worldly life over the hereafter? It is because the world is present before us along with its contents; foods, drinks, luxuries and its shine, whereas the hereafter is hidden from us, so we took what is before us and abandoned what is to come our way later on.

Tafsir Rooh al-Bayaan تفسیر روح البیان
(وفى كشف الاسرار) مصطفى عليه السلام أول قلم فتوى:
در حق دنيا اين راند كه حلالها حساب وحرامها عذاب آنكه برو لعنت كرد كه:
الدنيا ملعونة ملعون ما فيها الا ذكر اللہ
It is mentioned in Kashf al-Asrar: The very first Shariah verdict (Fatwa) the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – gave over the world was the following:
There is accountability over its Halaal and punishment over its Haraam.
He even cursed the world and its contents:
الدنيا ملعونة ملعون ما فيها الا ذكر اللہ
“Cursed is the world and its contents except the remembrance of Allah.”
