Proclaim the Purity of your Lord, the Supreme.

Tafsir al-Tabari

i.e. there is no Lord higher and greater than Him and some used to say the following after its recitation:

Glory be to my Supreme Lord.

Tafsir al-Baghawi

i.e. say:

Glory be to my Supreme Lord.

This is the concept that was adopted by a large group of the Companions and their followers.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas – may Allah be pleased with him – reported that the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – recited this verse then he recited:

Glory be to my Supreme Lord.

Tafsir al-Kabeer

It is narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Uqabah ibn ‘Amir – may Allah be pleased with him – that when Allah’s following statement was revealed:

Therefore O beloved’, glorify the name of your Lord, the Magnificent.

(Al-Waqi’ah 56, Verse 96)

The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – said to us, “Make it a part of your Ruku’” (i.e.

And when Allah’s following statement was revealed:

Glory be to my Supreme Lord.

The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – said to us, “Make it a part of your Sajdah” (i.e.

It is reported in the Ahadeeth that the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – used to recite the following in his Ruku’:

Glory be to my Magnificent Lord.

And the following in his Sajdah:

Glory be to my Supreme Lord.

The first person to recite:

Glory be to my Supreme Lord.

Was Sayyiduna Mikael – peace be upon him.

The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – said to Sayyiduna Jibreel – peace be upon him, “O Jibreel, tell me about the virtues of the one who recites سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلَى during his Salah or otherwise.”  He replied, “O Muhammad (may Allah send peace and blessings upon him), Whichever believing man or woman recites it in their Sajdah or otherwise, definitely receives its reward heavier than the ‘Arsh and the Divine Throne and all the mountains of the world combined, and Allah Almighty states, “My servant has spoken the truth.  I am above everything and there is nothing above Me.  Bear witness, O my angels, that I have forgiven him and entered him in Paradise.  When he dies, Mikael will visit him everyday, and he will carry him on his wing on the Day of Judgment and will present him before the Almighty Allah.  He will say, ‘Oh my Lord, grant me the permission to intercede’ and the Almighty will say, ‘I have granted you the intercession, take it and go to Paradise’.”
