فَلَا اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَۃَ ﴿۱۱﴾۫ۖ

So he did not quickly enter the steep valley.

Tafsir al-Kabeer                                                                                                             التفسیر الکبیر                        

قَالَ الْحَسَنُ عَقَبَةُ اللَّهِ شَدِيدَةٌ وَهِيَ مُجَاهَدَةُ الْإِنْسَانِ نَفْسَهُ وَهَوَاهُ وَعَدُوَّهُ مِنْ شَيَاطِينِ الْإِنْسِ وَالْجِنِّ

 وَأَقُولُ هَذَا التَّفْسِيرُ هُوَ الْحَقُّ لِأَنَّ الْإِنْسَانَ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَتَرَقَّى مِنْ عَالَمِ الْحِسِّ وَالْخَيَالِ إِلَى يَفَاعِ عَالَمِ الْأَنْوَارِ الْإِلَهِيَّةِ

Sayyiduna Hasan – may Allah be pleased with him – said:  The valley of Allah is a tough place.  It is the struggle of oneself with its carnal desires and its enemies; the devils of humans thereof and of the jinns thereof.

I say that this explanation is true, for the man desires to ascend from the material world and yearns for the world of Allah’s enlightenments.
