O the contented soul!

Tafsir al-Baghawi

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with them – said:  When a believer dies, Allah Almighty sends two angels towards him with a gift from Paradise.  It is then said to him, “Come out, O the contented soul.  Come out to the soul and garden.  Your Lord is pleased with you.”  It will then come out like the fragrance of musk one smells through his nose.  The angels above the heaven will say, “Indeed a pure soul is coming from the earth.”  Whichever door it will come to will be opened until it will be brought to the Most Compassionate (Allah Almighty) and prostrate before Him.  It will be said to Sayyiduna Mikaeel – peace be upon him, “Take him to the souls of believers.”  Then he will be commanded to widen his grave by 70 hands in length and 70 hands in width and a garden will be made for him.  If he has Quran with him (preserved in his heart) it will suffice to enlighten the grave but if he does not then the light like the sun will be made for him in his grave.  He will be kept like a bride.  No one will disturb him except for when his loved ones visit him.

When a disbeliever dies, Allah Almighty sends two angels towards him with a striped garment which will be stinking and rougher than any object.  He will then be told, “O evil soul, come out to hell and the painful punishment.  Your Lord is displeased with you.”

It is said that it is the dialogue of the angels for the friends of Allah Almighty.

Sayyiduna Hasan Basri – may Allah be pleased with him – said:  When Allah Almighty wills to capture the soul of a believer, his soul becomes peaceful (willingly) towards Allah Almighty and Allah Almighty becomes peaceful towards the soul.

Sayyiduna Sa’eed ibn Zaaid – may Allah be pleased with him – said:  A man recited this verse by the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him.  Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – said, “How beautiful it is, O Allah’s Messenger.”  The beloved Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – then said to him, “The angel will soon say that to you, O Abu Bakr.”

Sayyiduna Sa’eed ibn Jubair – may Allah be pleased with him – said:  When Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas – my Allah be pleased with them – passed away, a bird came the kind of which was never seen before.  It entered his shroud and was not seen coming out of it.  When he was buried, this verse was recited at the graveside but its reciter could not be identified:

‘O you peaceful soul.’

Return to your Lord well pleased with Him, and He well pleased with you.

So enter you among My chosen bondmen.

  And come to My Garden.

Tafsir Rooh al-Bayaan

It is mentioned in Al-Ta’reefaat:  Al-Nafs al-Mutma’innah (the contented soul) is the one which is enlightened by the light of the heart until it is purified of all the evil qualities and adorned by virtuous conducts.
