And when hell is brought that day – on that day will man reflect, but where is the time now to think?

Sayyiduna ‘Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – asked, “O Allah’s Messenger, how will hell be brought?”  He replied, “It will be pulled by seventy thousand sets of reins, each set of reins pulled by the hands of seventy thousand angels, as it groans and seethes in fury.  If I let go, it would burn all the people, and then the hell will speak to me and say, “What business do I have with you, O Muhammad?  Indeed Allah Almighty has forbidden your meat upon me.”

There is be no one but worried about himself (Nafsi, Nafsi) except for Sayyiduna Muhammad – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – who will be saying “Oh my Lord, my Ummah! Oh my Lord, my Ummah!”

Tafsir al-Jalalain

And Hell on that day is brought [near], pulled by seventy thousand sets of reins, each set of reins [pulled] by the hands of seventy thousand angels, as it groans and seethes in fury; on that day, the man, i.e. the disbeliever, will remember, his prodigal conduct in it, but how will remembering avail him [now]? in other words, his remembering that will not be of any use to him.
