وَ ثَمُوۡدَ الَّذِیۡنَ جَابُوا الصَّخْرَ بِالْوَادِ ﴿۹﴾۪ۙ
And the tribe of Thamud, who hewed rocks in the valley.
Tafsir al-Qurtubi تفسیر القرطبی
قَالَ الْمُفَسِّرُونَ: أَوَّلُ مَنْ نَحَتَ الْجِبَالَ وَالصُّوَرَ وَالرُّخَامَ: ثَمُودُ.
The exegetists have said: The first to shape and sculpt the stones and marble were the nation of Thamood.

Tafsir al-Jalalain تفسیر الجلالین
{وَثَمُود الَّذِينَ جَابُوا} قَطَعُوا {الصَّخْر} وَاِتَّخَذُوهَا بُيُوتًا {بِالْوَادِ} وَادِي الْقُرَى
The Thamood who hollowed, hewed, the rocks and took them as homes, in the valley, the valley which they used as dwellings.

Tafsir Rooh al-Bayaan تفسیر روح البیان
Thamood is a famous tribe named after their grandfather Thamood, the brother of Jadees, and both of them were the children of ‘Amir ibn Raam ibn Saam ibn Nooh – peace be upon him. They were Arabs from Aribah lived in the mountains between Hijaz and Tabook. They used to worship idols like ‘Aad and they were the nation of Sayyiduna Saleh – peace be upon him, as the Almighty has stated:
وَ اِلٰی ثَمُوۡدَ اَخَاہُمْ صٰلِحًا
And We sent Saleh to the tribe of Thamud, from their own community
(Al-A’raf 7, Verse 73)
