Tafsir al-Qurtubi
The Hadeeth in Bukhari which is narrated by Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Zam’ah – may Allah be pleased with him: He heard Allah’s Messenger – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – delivered an address and he made a mention of the she-camel and also made a mention of one (base person) who cut off Its hind legs, and he recited:
When the most wicked among them stood up in defiance.
(Al-Shams 91, Verse 12)
A mischievous person, strong and enormous because of the strength of a family like Abu Zam’a.
Sayyiduna Dhahhak – may Allah be pleased with him – narrated the Hadeeth from Sayyiduna ‘Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – that the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – said to him, “Do you know who is the most wicked person amongst the early generations?” I said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said, “It was the one who cut the she-camel.” “Do you know who is the most wicked amongst the latter generations?” I said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He replied, “It’s your murderer.”
