Tafsir al-Baghawi
Sayyiduna Zaid ibn Arqam – may Allah be pleased with him – is reported to have said: I am not going to say anything but only that which Allah’s Messenger – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – used to say. He used to supplicate:” O Allah, I seek refuge in You from incapacity, from sloth, from cowardice, from miserliness, decrepitude and from torment of the grave. O Allah, grant to my soul the sense of righteousness and purify it, for You art the Best Purifier thereof. You are the Protecting Friend thereof, and Guardian thereof. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the knowledge which does not benefit, from the heart that does not have the fear (of Allah), from the soul that does not feel contented and from the supplication that is not answered.”
Tafsir al-Baghawi (Ma’aalim al-Tanzeel) of Muhiyy al-Sunnah Imam Abu Muhammad Al-Husain ibn Mas’ood al-Baghwi al-Shafe’I t D. 510 A.H.
Tafsir Rooh al-Bayaan
Hadeeth: Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas – may Allah be pleased with him – reported that the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – stated during the recitation of this verse: The purification of the soul is a means to attain the purification of the heart, for when the soul becomes purified of the cardinal desires then it becomes free off any other attachment except to Allah.
Until the soul is not purified of the impurities
The heart cannot become the manifestation of the Allah’s radiance.
Tafsir Rooh al-Bayaan of Imam Isma’eel Haqqi ibn Mustafa al-Istanbuli Hanafi t D. 1127 A.H.
