Did He not find you an orphan, so provided you shelter?

Tafsir al-Baghawi

Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them – reported that the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – has stated:  I asked my Lord a question but I wish I hadn’t, I said, “O my Lord, You have granted Sulayman – peace be upon him – a great kingdom and granted others such things; so on and so forth.”  The Almighty stated, “When I found you orphan, did I not provide you shelter, O Muhammad?”  “Of course, my Lord” I replied.  He said, “Did I not find you deeply engrossed in My love, so directed you?”  “Of course, my Lord” I replied.  He said, “Did I not find you in need, so made you prosperous?”  “Of course, my Lord” I replied.

Meaning of the verse:  Did He not find you as a young orphan when your parents had departed without leaving wealth or shelter behind for you, then I made a shelter for you to nestle in it and joined you with your uncle Abu Talib so he brought you up well and supported you.

Tafsir al-Kabeer

As the historians have mentioned that Sayyiduna Abdullah (Father of the beloved Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him) ibn Abdul Muttalib – may Allah be pleased with them – passed away while his mother was pregnant with him.

When the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – was born, he was with his mother and then his mother, Sayyidah Aminah – may Allah be pleased with her – passed away when he was a 6 years old boy.

He then used to live with his grandfather and two years later, his grandfather passed away when he was eight years old.

Sayyiduna ‘Abdul Muttalib – may Allah be pleased with him – entrusted him to Abu Talib because Abu Talib and Sayyiduna Abdullah were born from the same mother, so it was then Abu Talib who brought up the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – after his grandfather until Allah Almighty appointed the Prophethood upon him then he stood tall with his support for a lengthy period.  Abu Talib then passed away but there was no sign of being an orphan on the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – at all, therefore Allah Almighty mentioned this blessing.

Tafsir al-Qurtubi

A questioned was posed to Imam Ja’fer Sadiq – may Allah be pleased with him:  Why was the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – orphaned from both his parents?

He replied:  So there is no one in the entire creation whom he owed anything.

The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings be upon him – used to say:  I was orphan in my young age and in my old age I am an immigrant.

He used to love orphans and treat them well.
