And no one has done a favour to him, for which he should be compensated.
Tafsir al-Tabari
The authentic view is the one that has been passed down from the interpreters of the Holy Quran, they said: This verse was revealed about Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – for freeing the slave.

Some exegetists have said that this verse was revealed regarding Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him.

Tafsir al-Qurtubi
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them – is reported to have said: The polytheists punished Sayyiduna Bilal – may Allah be pleased with him – and Bilal would say “Ahad! Ahad! (Allah! Allah!) The beloved Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – passed by him and said, “That Ahad (One Allah) will grant you salvation.” He then said to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him, “O Abu Bakr, indeed Bilal is being punished in the path of Allah.” So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – understood what the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – had intended. He returned to his house, took one pound gold and headed to Umayyah ibn khalaf, and said to him, “Would you sell Bilal to me?” He said, “Yes.” So he bought him for and freed him. The polytheists alleged that Abu Bakr only freed him to return a favour which he must have received from him in the past. This verse was then revealed i.e. And no one has done a favour to him i.e. to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him in terms of help or favour, for which he should be compensated i.e. He desires only to please his Lord, the Supreme.
Sayyiduna ‘Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – reported that the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – has stated: May Allah have mercy on Abu Bakr; he married his daughter to me and carried me to the city where I migrated and freed Bilal with his wealth.
When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – bought Sayyiduna Bilal – may Allah be pleased with him, Sayyiduna Bilal said to him, “Have you bought me to do your work or was it for Allah’s work?” He replied, “It was rather for Allah’s work.” He then said, “So let me go and do Allah’s work.” He then freed him.
Sayyiduna ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab – may Allah be pleased with him – used to say: Abu Bakr is our leader and he freed our leader (Sayyiduna Bilal – may Allah be pleased with him).
