Indeed your efforts differ.

Tafsir al-Tabari

Indeed, O people, your actions differ; for some of you disbelieve in your Lord and disobey Him in His commands and prohibitions while some of you believe in Him and obey Him in His commands and prohibitions.

Tafsir Al-Tabari (Tafsir Ibn Jareer / Jame’ al-Bayaan fi Taweel al-Quraan) of Imam Abu Ja’far Muhammad ibn Jareer al-Tabri t D. 310 A.H.

Tafsir al-Baghawi

Sayyiduna Abu Malik Ash’ari – may Allah be pleased with him – reported that the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – has stated:  Everyone wakes up and sells himself, so he either frees himself or destroys himself.

Tafsir al-Baghawi (Ma’aalim al-Tanzeel) of Muhiyy al-Sunnah Imam Abu Muhammad Al-Husain ibn Mas’ood al-Baghwi al-Shafe’I t D. 510 A.H.

Tafsir al-Kabeer

The exegetists have mentioned:  This verse was revealed regarding Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Abu Sufyan – may Allah be pleased with them – then Allah Almighty made the meaning of difference in actions clear (in the verses that are to come).

Tafsir al-Jalalain

Assuredly your efforts, your deeds, are dissimilar, with some working towards Paradise by means of obedience, while others [in effect] are working towards the Fire through acts of disobedience.

Tafsir al-Durr al-Manthoor

Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ood reported that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddeeq – may Allah be pleased with them – purchased Sayyiduna Bilal – may Allah be pleased with him – from Umayyah and Ubayi ibn khalaf for a striped garment and 10 Awqiyah (a unit of measure and each awqiyah consists of 40 gold coins) and freed him, hence Allah Almighty revealed this Surah and signifies in this verse the difference between the virtues of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – and the evil of Umayyah and Ubayi.
