And they were ordered only to worship Allah, believing purely in Him – devoted solely (to Him), and to establish the prayer and to pay the obligatory charity – and this is the straight religion.
Tafsir al-Tabari
And Allah Almighty ordered them, these jews and Christians who are called people of the book, to only worship Allah, believing purely in Him i.e. Allah Almighty says: They were to devote solely to him in obedience without mixing their priority in obedience by associating partners but the jews did associate partners with their Lord by saying that Sayyiduna ‘Uzair – peace be upon him – is Allah’s son, and the Christians as well by saying the similar thing regarding Sayyiduna Messiah (Prophet ‘Isa – peace be upon him) and by their denial of the Prophethood of Sayyiduna Muhammad – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him.

Tafsir al-Baghawi
And they (i.e. these infidels) were ordered only to worship Allah, believing purely in Him. Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them – said: They were commanded in Torah and Bible to only adopt devotion in Allah’s worship as monotheists – devoted solely (to Him) (i.e. turning away from all the other faiths and turning to Islam) and to establish the prayer (that were prescribed to them on its specified times) and to pay the obligatory charity (in its appropriate place) and this (what they were commanded to do) is the straight religion (i.e. the straight Shariah and religion).

Tafsir al-Nasafi
And they were ordered (in Torah and Bible) only to worship Allah, believing purely in Him (without polytheism and hypocrisy) devoted solely to Him (by believing in all the Prophets and cutting off from all false religions) and to establish prayer and to pay the obligatory charity – and this is the straight religion (the religion of straight creed).

Tafsir al-Jalalain
And they were only commanded, in their Scripture, the Torah and the Bible, to worship Allah, devoting religion purely to Him,
[free]
of any idolatry, as hanifs, upright in [following] the religion of Sayyiduna Ibrahim – peace be upon him – and the religion of Sayyiduna Muhammad – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him, when he would come — so how is it that they disbelieved in him?, and to establish prayer and pay the alms. That is the straight religion, the straight creed.

Tafsir al-Durr al-Manthoor
It was told to Sayyiduna ‘Ata ibn Rabah – may Allah be pleased with him – about a people regarding their claim “Salah and Zakah are not part of Deen”, so he replied, “Has Allah Almighty not stated this “And they were ordered only to worship Allah, believing purely in Him – devoted solely (to Him), and to establish the prayer and to pay the obligatory charity – and this is the straight religion.”
Therefore Salah and Zakah are part of religion.
