On that day men will return towards their Lord, in different groups, in order to be shown their deeds.

Tafsir al-Baghawi

“On that day men will return” i.e. people will return after appearing at the site of reckoning “in different groups” individually, then the ones on the right will proceed to Paradise and the ones on the left will proceed to hell “in order to be shown their deeds” Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas – may Allah be pleased with him – said, “in order to be shown the consequences of their deeds.”

Tafsir al-Qurtubi

It has been reported from the beloved Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – that he has stated: Everyone will be blaming himself on the day of Judgment; the one who has done good will say, “Why didn’t I do more good?!” and the others will say, “Why didn’t I stay away from disobedience?!”.  It will occur upon the observation of reward and punishment.

Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas – may Allah be pleased with him – used to say:  People will differ as per their grading of their deeds; the believers will be on one side and the people of different faiths on one side.

Tafsir al-Jalalain

“On that day people will return” they will depart from the site of the Reckoning, in separate groups, divided up, so that those taking it by the right hand will go to Paradise, while those taking it by the left hand will go to the Fire, “to be shown their deeds” the requital for them, in Paradise or hell.

Tafsir Rooh al-Bayaan

They will be separate groups of people; there will be those with luminous faces and dressed in white and peaceful accompanied by a caller who will be proclaiming “This is Allah’s friend.”

There will also be those with black faces bare feet and naked chained and shackled accompanied by a caller who will proclaim, “This is Allah’s enemy.”

Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas – may Allah be pleased with him – reported that Sayyiduna Jibreel – peace be upon him – visited the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – one day and said:  O Muhammad, you Lord sends Salam to you and states, “Why are you worried and grieving?”  though He knows best.  The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – said, “O Jibreel, my biggest worry is concerning the state of my nation on the Day of Judgment.”  Sayyiduna Jibreel – peace be upon him –inquired, “O Muhammad, is it concerning the infidels or the Muslims?”  He replied, “O Jibreel, it is only concerning the state of those who believe in the Kalimah La Ilaha illAllah.”

Sayyiduna Jibreel – peace be upon him – held his hand and took him to the cemetery of Banu Salmah and flapped his right wing on a grave saying, “Stand up by the command of Allah.”  A bright faced man emerged from the grave saying “La ilaha illAllah Muhammadur Rasoolullah.  All praise is due to Allah.”  Sayyiduna Jibreel – peace be upon him – told him to return so he returned.  He then flapped his left wing on a grave and a dark faced man emerged from within saying, “Alas, I’m so ashamed!  Alas, I’m so embarrassed!”  Sayyiduna Jibreel – peace be upon him – told him to return so he returned.  He then said, “This is how they will be resurrected in the same state they had died.”
