One which shall rise over the hearts.

Tafsir al-Tabari

Its rage and flames will rise up to the hearts.

Tafsir Al-Tabari (Tafsir Ibn Jareer / Jame’ al-Bayaan fi Taweel al-Quraan) of Imam Abu Ja’far Muhammad ibn Jareer al-Tabri t D. 310 A.H.

Tafsir al-Kabeer

The fire will enter their abdomen reaching up to their hearts and will rise over their hearts.  None of the body-parts in a human body is more delicate than the heart and no pain can be compared to the heartache even if it hurts a little.  One can only imagine what would happen when the fire of hell will rise up and overtake it.

Then there is the concept that although the fire will rise up to the heart but will not burn it, for if it burns it, the heart would die.  It can be deduced from the following statement of the Almighty:

He will neither die there in nor live.

(Al-A’la 87, Verse 13)

The reason as to why the heart has been specifically mentioned is because it is the abode of infidelity, evil beliefs and corrupt intentions.

The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – has stated:  The hellfire will consume its residents up to the point where it rises up to the heart, it will stop.  Allah Almighty will then restore its flesh and bones all over again.

Tafsir al-Kabeer (Mafateeh al-Ghaib) of Imam Fakhruddin Muhammad ibn Umar al-Raazi al-Shafe’i t D. 606 A.H.

Tafsir al-Qurtubi

Sayyiduna Muhammad ibn Ka’b – may Allah be pleased with him – said:  The hellfire will consume all of the body until it reaches the heart, they will be restored and revived, and then the process of consumption will restart.
