Never! He will certainly be thrown into the crusher.

Tafsir al-Tabari

It is not what he has perceived.  His wealth will not make him immortal.  The Almighty then informed them that he will be destroyed and punished over his actions and disobedience which he committed in the world.  Therefore, the Almighty has stated the verse i.e. he will be captured in the crusher on the Day of Judgment.

Al-Hutamah is one of the names of hell.

Tafsir Al-Tabari (Tafsir Ibn Jareer / Jame’ al-Bayaan fi Taweel al-Quraan) of Imam Abu Ja’far Muhammad ibn Jareer al-Tabri t D. 310 A.H.

Tafsir al-Matureedi

i.e. it is unlike what he perceived in his mind.

There are different views about Al-Humtamah:

  1. It is one of the gates of hell.
  2. It is one of the qualities of hell.

Tafsir al-Matureedi (Taweel Ahl al-Sunnah) of Imam Abu Mansoor Muhammad Ibn Muhammad al-Matureedi t D. 333 A.H.

Tafsir al-Baghawi

It is to refute him, that his wealth will make him immortal.  They will be thrown in the crusher i.e. hell.

Al-Hutamah is one of the names of hell.

It was named Al-Hutamah because it crushes the bones and breaks them.

Tafsir al-Baghawi (Ma’aalim al-Tanzeel) of Muhiyy al-Sunnah Imam Abu Muhammad Al-Husain ibn Mas’ood al-Baghwi al-Shafe’I t D. 510 A.H.

Tafsir al-Kabeer

The usage of the word “to throw” denotes disgrace, for the infidels used to believe that they are honourable beings.

The exegetists have said:  Al-Hutamah is one of the names of hell and it is the second level amongst the levels of hell.

Sayyiduna Muqatil – may Allah be pleased with him – said:  It crushes the bones and consumes the flesh until it escalates up to the heart.

It has been reported from the beloved Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – that he said:  The angel will take the infidel and break his bones like the wood is broken on the knee.  After his bones are broken, he will be thrown in hell.

Tafsir al-Kabeer (Mafateeh al-Ghaib) of Imam Fakhruddin Muhammad ibn Umar al-Raazi al-Shafe’i t D. 606 A.H.

Tafsir al-Qurtubi

Sayyiduna ‘Umar ibn ‘Abdullah – may Allah be pleased with him – said:  Whenever you hear Allah Almighty say “Kalla” it means that He is implying, “You have lied.” (i.e. they were delusional to think that their wealth will make them immortal)

It’s the refutation of the delusion of the infidels i.e. they are not immortal, and their wealth will not last forever.

Tafsir Qurtubi (Al-Jame’ Li Ahkaam al-Quran) Imam Shamsuddin Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Qurtubi t D. 671 A.H.

Tafsir al-Durr al-Manthoor

Imam Ibn Abi Hatim reported from Al-Hasan ibn Waqid, he said:  Al-Hutamah is one of the gates of hell.

Tafsir Al-Durr al-Manthoor Bi al-Tafsir al-Mathoor of Imam Jalaaluddin Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr al-Suyooti al-Shafe’i t D. 911 A.H.
