Therefore, pray to your Lord, and offer sacrifice.
Tafsir al-Tabari
The exegetists have said about Salah in the command of Allah to His Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him, that he should pray Salah.
As far as the interpretation of the command “and offer sacrifice”, is concerned, some have said, “It refers to being constant on Fard Salah and to preserve its punctuality at its times.”
Sayyiduna Anas ibn Malik – may Allah be pleased with him – is reported to have said: The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – used to offer sacrifice (Qurbani) before (Eid al-Adha) Salah, so Allah Almighty commanded him pray the Salah first and then slaughter the Qurbani.
Sayyiduna ‘Ikramah – may Allah be pleased with him – interpreted it as: Therefore pray the Salah and offer Qurbani.
Sayyiduna Muhammad ibn Ka’b al-Qurazi – may Allah be pleased with him – used to say about this verse: There were a people who prayed to others than Allah and offered sacrifices to others than Allah (so the interpretation would be) i.e. So when We (Allah) have bestowed upon you abundance of good then, O Muhammad, pray your Salah only to Me and offer sacrifice for My sake alone.
Sayyiduna Sa’eed ibn Jubair – may Allah be pleased with him – is reported to have commented: This verse was revealed on the Day of Hudaibiyah. Sayyiduna Jibreel – peace be upon him – came to the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – and said, “Offer sacrifice and go back.” So the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – stood and delivered the sermon of Fitr and Qurbani, then prayed two Rak’ats Salah and then return to the Qurbani animal and slaughtered it.

Tafsir al-Nasafi
Worship the Lord who has exalted you by bestowing the honour upon you, saved you from anyone’s favours, disgraced your nation that worship others than Allah. “And offer sacrifice” i.e. for the sake of Allah and in His Name, to oppose the idol-worshippers and their deeds of sacrificing for the idols.
Tafsir al-Nasafi (Madarik al-Tanzeel) of Imam Abul Barakaat Abdullah ibn Ahmed al-Nasafi t D. 710 A.H.
Tafsir al-Jalalain

Tafsir al-Jalalain of Imam Jalaaluddin Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Mahalli al-Shafe’i t D. 864 A.H. and Imam Jalaaluddin Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr al-Suyooti al-Shafe’i t D. 911 A.H.
Tafsir Rooh al-Bayaan
i.e. pray Salah for your Lord, purely for his sake, who has bestowed upon you great bounties that nothing can be compared to it. It will be a form of gratitude to Him, for the Salah encompasses all forms of gratitude:
- a) Being grateful in one’s heart i.e. acknowledging in the heart that all the bounties are from Allah alone and no one else.
- b) Being grateful verbally i.e. to praise Allah Almighty, the Provider, upon it.
- c) Being grateful physically i.e. to show appreciation with the humility of limbs in His Court (through Salah).
Salah encompasses all.
“And offer sacrifice” i.e. sacrifice the assets, that are the primary means to the Arabs, in the name of Allah Almighty and give it to the needy as charity, opposing the ones who chase them away, as described in Surah Al-Ma’oon, so this Surah is contradicts the practices of the polytheists as mentioned in the previous Surah.
Tafsir Rooh al-Bayaan of Imam Isma’eel Haqqi ibn Mustafa al-Istanbuli Hanafi t D. 1127 A.H.
