Those who make a Show of it.
Tafsir al-Tabari
English translation.
They are the people who show off when they pray Salah, because they have no desire for reward, no fear of punishment, but they pray to be seen by the believers, so they may think good of them and spare their blood and their children’s. They were the hypocrites in the time of the messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) who internalized infidelity and showed Islam externally.
Tafsir Al-Tabari (Tafsir Ibn Jareer / Jame’ al-Bayaan fi Taweel al-Quraan) of Imam Abu Ja’far Muhammad ibn Jareer al-Tabri t D. 310 A.H.
Tafsir al-Matureedi
Sayyiduna Hasan – may Allah be pleased with him – said: They were the hypocrites who delayed their Salah from its time and showed off when they prayed Salah.
Tafsir al-Matureedi (Taweel Ahl al-Sunnah) of Imam Abu Mansoor Muhammad Ibn Muhammad al-Matureedi t D. 333 A.H.
Tafsir al-Baghawi
Allah Almighty described the traits of hypocrites as follows:
Undoubtedly, the hypocrites are likely to deceive Allah in their own conjecture and it is He who will kill them making them negligent, and when they stand up for prayer they stand up with a defeated soul (lazily) making a show to the people and remember not Allah but little.
(Al-Nisa 4, Verse 142)
Sayyiduna Qatadah – may Allah be pleased with him – said: They are heedless of it; whether they pray or don’t, it does not make a difference.
Tafsir al-Baghawi (Ma’aalim al-Tanzeel) of Muhiyy al-Sunnah Imam Abu Muhammad Al-Husain ibn Mas’ood al-Baghwi al-Shafe’I t D. 510 A.H.
Tafsir al-Kabeer
Know that the difference between a hypocrite and a pretender is that the hypocrite externally shows Iman with hidden infidelity while the pretender shows the sincerity which is not in his heart to make the on-looker believe that he is a religious person.
It can also be said that the hypocrite does not pray Salah in privacy while the pretender, his Salah appears to be good in people’s eyes.
Know that it is necessary to make the performance of Fard Salah and Zakah known, for they are the essentials of Islam, and the one who abandons them deserves bad repute. Therefore, it is necessary to eliminate the reason due to which one may become victim of criticism, and it is achieved through making the action obvious. There is no doubt that hiding applies to optional prayers unless it is done to motivate people towards it.
It is narrated from some that someone saw a man making the Sajdah of Shukr in Masjid and he prolonged it. He said, “It would be much better had you done it at home.” But along with this, they also said, “One should not shy away from optional prayers when there is no pretense intended from it, although there are less chances of eliminating pretense.
It is for this reason that the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – has stated: Pretense is even more deceitful than a black ant crawling on a black surface in a dark night.”
Tafsir al-Kabeer (Mafateeh al-Ghaib) of Imam Fakhruddin Muhammad ibn Umar al-Raazi al-Shafe’i t D. 606 A.H.
Tafsir al-Baidawi
I,e, they used to show people their actions so they may praise them over it.
Tafsir al-Baidawi (Anwaar al-Tanzeel wa Asraar al-Taweel) of Imam Qadhi Abdullah ibn Umar al-Shiraazi al-Baidawi t D. 685 A.H.
