فَوَیۡلٌ لِّلْمُصَلِّیۡنَ ۙ﴿۴﴾

Then woe to those prayer performers.

 

Tafsir al-Tabari                                                             تفسیر الطبری

فَالْوَادِي الَّذِي يَسِيلُ مِنْ صَدِيدِ أَهْلِ جَهَنَّمَ لِلْمُنَافِقِينَ الَّذِينَ يُصَلُّونَ، لَا يُرِيدُونَ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ بِصَلَاتِهِمْ، وَهُمْ فِي صَلَاتِهِمْ سَاهُونَ إِذَا صَلُّوهَا.

(Wail) is a valley in hell which is made of the pus of the residents of hell.  It is designated for the hypocrites who, when they read Salah, they do not do it for the sake of Allah Almighty, and contemplate over it when they have to pray.

 

Tafsir Al-Tabari (Tafsir Ibn Jareer / Jame’ al-Bayaan fi Taweel al-Quraan) of Imam Abu Ja’far Muhammad ibn Jareer al-Tabri t D. 310 A.H.

 

Tafsir al-Baghawi                                                        تفسیر البغوی

قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ: هُمُ الْمُنَافِقُونَ يَتْرُكُونَ الصَّلَاةَ إِذَا غَابُوا عَنِ النَّاسِ، وَيُصَلُّونَهَا فِي الْعَلَانِيَةِ إِذَا حَضَرُوا

Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them – said:  They are the hypocrites who abandon Salah when they are away from people and publicly perform Salah when people are around.

 

Tafsir al-Baghawi (Ma’aalim al-Tanzeel) of Muhiyy al-Sunnah Imam Abu Muhammad Al-Husain ibn Mas’ood al-Baghwi al-Shafe’I t D. 510 A.H.

 

Tafsir al-Kabeer                                                                                                 التفسیر الکبیر

فَوَيْلٌ لِلْمُصَلِّينَ أَيْ فَوَيْلٌ لِلْمُصَلِّينَ مِنَ الْمُنَافِقِينَ الَّذِينَ يَأْتُونَ بِهَذِهِ الْأَفْعَالِ

 

i.e. Wail is for such Musallies amongst the hypocrites who do such things.

 

الْمَعْنَى كَمَا قَالَ: وَإِذا قامُوا إِلَى الصَّلاةِ قامُوا كُسالى يُراؤُنَ النَّاسَ وَلا يَذْكُرُونَ اللَّهَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا[النِّسَاءِ: 142]

The meaning is, as Allah Almighty has stated:

اِنَّ الْمُنٰفِقِیۡنَ یُخٰدِعُوۡنَ اللہَ وَہُوَ خٰدِعُہُمْ ۚ وَ اِذَا قَامُوۡۤا اِلَی الصَّلٰوۃِ قَامُوۡا کُسَالٰی ۙ یُرَآءُوۡنَ النَّاسَ وَلَا یَذْکُرُوۡنَ اللہَ اِلَّا قَلِیۡلًا ﴿۱۴۲﴾۫ۙ

Undoubtedly the hypocrites, in their fancy, seek to deceive Allah whereas He will extinguish them while making them oblivious; and when they stand up for prayer, they do it unwillingly and for others to see, and they do not remember Allah except a little.

(Al-Nisa 4, Verse 142)

 

أَنَّ السَّهْوَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ مِنْ أَفْعَالِ الْمُؤْمِنِ وَالسَّهْوَ عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ من أفعال الكافر

Negligence within Salah is the act of a believer and negligence from Salah is the act of an infidel.

 

التَّرْكُ لَا إِلَى قَضَاءٍ وَالْإِخْرَاجُ عَنِ الْوَقْتِ، وَمِنْ ذَلِكَ صَلَاةُ الْمُنَافِقِ وَهِيَ شَرٌّ مِنْ تَرْكِ الصَّلَاةِ لِأَنَّهُ يَسْتَهْزِئُ بِالدِّينِ بِتِلْكَ الصَّلَاةِ.

To abandon Salah without Qada and conveniently letting it pass through its time.  It is the Salah of a hypocrite which is more evil than missing a Salah, for they used to ridicule Islam with their Salah (of this nature).

 

Tafsir al-Kabeer (Mafateeh al-Ghaib) of Imam Fakhruddin Muhammad ibn Umar al-Raazi al-Shafe’i t D. 606 A.H.

 

Tafsir al-Qurtubi                                                                                                                         تفسیر القرطبی

عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: هُوَ الْمُصَلِّيَ الَّذِي إِنْ صَلَّى لَمْ يَرْجُ لَهَا ثَوَابًا، وَإِنْ تَرَكَهَا لَمْ يَخْشَ عَلَيْهَا عِقَابًا.

Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas – may Allah be pleased with him – is reported to have said:  It is about a Musalli when he reads it, there is no reward and when he leaves it there is no punishment. (Such as the Salah of a hypocrite, which never benefit them in anyway)

 

وَعَنْهُ أَيْضًا: الَّذِينَ يُؤَخِّرُونَهَا عَنْ أَوْقَاتِهَا.

It is also reported from him:  It is about those who (Deliberately) delay the Salah from its time.

 

قَالَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ [فِي قَوْلِهِ]: فَوَيْلٌ لِلْمُصَلِّينَ الَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنْ صَلاتِهِمْ ساهُونَ- قَالَ-: [الَّذِينَ يُؤَخِّرُونَ الصَّلَاةَ عَنْ وَقْتِهَا، تَهَاوُنًا بِهَا [.

The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – has stated:  It is about those who delay the Salah from its time due to their negligence towards it.

 

وَعَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَيْضًا: هُمُ الْمُنَافِقُونَ يَتْرُكُونَ الصَّلَاةَ سِرًّا، يُصَلُّونَهَا عَلَانِيَةً

Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas – may Allah be pleased with him – has also said:  They are the hypocrites who used to leave Salah in privacy and performed it publicly.

 

Tafsir Qurbuti (Al-Jame’ Li Ahkaam al-Quran) Imam Shamsuddin Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Qurtubi t D. 671 A.H.

 

Tafsir al-Nasafi                                                                                                                                                      تفسیر النسفی

يعنى بهذا المنافقين أى لا يصلونها سراً لأنهم لا يعتقدون وجوبها ويصلونها علانية رياء وقيل فويل للمنافقين الذين يدخلون أنفسهم في جملة المصلين صورة وهم غافلون عن صلاتهم وأنهم لا يريدون بها قربة إلى ربهم

 

i.e. the hypocrites who never performed Salah in privacy, for they do not believe in its necessity but pray publicly to show.  It is also said about the hypocrites that they used to join the Salah for its face value but were still negligent from their Salah, for they never intended Allah’s closeness through it.

Tafsir al-Jalalain                                                                                                                        تفسیر الجلالین

{الَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنْ صَلَاتهمْ سَاهُونَ} غَافِلُونَ يُؤَخِّرُونَهَا عن وقتها

 

i.e. who are negligent and delay it from its time.
