وَ لَا یَحُضُّ عَلٰی طَعَامِ الْمِسْکِیۡنِ ؕ﴿۳﴾

And does not urge the feeding of the poor.

 

Tafsir al-Baghawi                                                        تفسیر البغوی

لَا يُطْعِمُهُ وَلَا يَأْمُرُ بِإِطْعَامِهِ لِأَنَّهُ يُكَذِّبُ بِالْجَزَاءِ.

Neither does he feed him nor encourage feeding him, for he falsifies its reward.

Tafsir al-Kabeer                                                                                                 التفسیر الکبیر

فَفِيهِ وَجْهَانِ

أَحَدُهُمَا: أَنَّهُ لَا يَحُضُّ نَفْسَهُ عَلَى طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ وَإِضَافَةُ الطَّعَامِ إِلَى الْمِسْكِينِ تَدُلُّ عَلَى أَنَّ ذَلِكَ الطَّعَامَ حَقُّ الْمِسْكِينِ، فَكَأَنَّهُ مَنَعَ الْمِسْكِينَ مِمَّا هُوَ حَقُّهُ، وَذَلِكَ يَدُلُّ عَلَى نِهَايَةِ بُخْلِهِ وَقَسَاوَةِ قَلْبِهِ وَخَسَاسَةِ طَبْعِهِ

وَالثَّانِي: لَا يَحُضُّ غَيْرَهُ عَلَى إِطْعَامِ ذَلِكَ الْمِسْكِينِ بِسَبَبِ أَنَّهُ لَا يَعْتَقِدُ فِي ذَلِكَ الْفِعْلِ ثَوَابًا

It is in two ways:

  1. He does not urge himself to feed the poor. The relation of food to the poor denotes the kind of food which the poor have the right over.  It’s as if he is denying the poor what is due to them which highlights the extent of his misery, the ruthlessness of his heart and his mean nature.
  2. He does not urge others to feed the poor, for he does not believe in the reward of this deed.

Tafsir al-Qurtubi                                                                                                                         تفسیر القرطبی

لَكِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا يَبْخَلُونَ وَيَعْتَذِرُونَ لِأَنْفُسِهِمْ، وَيَقُولُونَ: أَنُطْعِمُ مَنْ لَوْ يَشاءُ اللَّهُ أَطْعَمَهُ «4» [يس: 47]، فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ فِيهِمْ، وَتَوَجَّهَ الذَّمُّ إِلَيْهِمْ.

فَيَكُونُ مَعْنَى الْكَلَامِ: لَا يَفْعَلُونَهُ إِنْ قَدَرُوا

Because they were mean and excused themselves for it and said:

اَنُطْعِمُ مَنۡ لَّوْ یَشَآءُ اللہُ اَطْعَمَہٗۤ ٭ۖ

“Shall we feed those whom Allah would have fed?”

(Yasin 36, Verse 47)

This verse was then revealed about them and the disgrace was rubbed over them.

The meaning the verse would be, “They do not feed even though they are capable of doing it.”

Tafsir al-Nasafi                                                                                                                                                      تفسیر النسفی

{وَلاَ يَحُضُّ على طَعَامِ المسكين} ولا يبعث أهله على بذل طعام المسكين

i.e. he does not urge his family to feed the poor.
