Tafsir al-Qurtubi
Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them – said: It was due to the Du’a of Sayyiduna Ibrahim – peace be upon him – when he prayed:
‘O my Lord make this City a region of peace and feed the inhabitants of it with varied fruits’
(Al-Baqarah 2, Verse 126)
When it became hard for them to travel in winter and summer, Allah Almighty put it in the hearts of Abyssinians to take food to them on boats. When they brought it, the Quraish became afraid of them and thought that they had come to fight and approached them with caution. When they found out that they had brought food for them and to help them with food supply, the people of Makkah Mukarramah left for Jeddah on camels and donkeys to buy food embarking on the journey of two nights.
Sayyiduna Dhahhak, Rabee’, Shareek and Sufyan – may Allah be pleased with them – said: i.e. Allah Almighty granted them protection from the fear of leprosy that leprosy will not affect them in their city.
Sayyiduna ‘Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – said about the verse: The Caliphate will only be among Quraish.
