فَلْيَعْبُدُوا رَبَّ هَـٰذَا الْبَيْتِ ﴿٣﴾

So they must worship the Lord of this House. (The Ka’bah)

 

Tafsir al-Tabari                                                             تفسیر الطبری

فَلْيُقِيمُوا بِمَوْضِعِهِمْ وَوَطَنِهِمْ مِنْ مَكَّةَ، وَلْيَعْبُدُوا رَبَّ هَذَا الْبَيْتِ، يَعْنِي بِالْبَيْتِ: الْكَعْبَةَ

So they may stay in their locality and homeland of Makkah Mukarramah and worship the Lord of this House i.e. the Holy Ka’bah.

 

أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، صَلَّى الْمَغْرِبَ بِمَكَّةَ، فَقَرَأَ: {لِإِيلَافِ قُرَيْشٍ} [قريش: 1] فَلَمَّا انْتَهَى إِلَى قَوْلِهِ: {فَلْيَعْبُدُوا رَبَّ هَذَا الْبَيْتِ} [قريش: 3] أَشَارَ بِيَدِهِ إِلَى الْبَيْتِ

Sayyiduna ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab – may Allah be pleased with him – performed Maghrib Salah in Makkah Mukarramah and recited Surah Quraish, and when he recited this verse, he pointed towards the Holy Ka’bah with his hand.

 

عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ:  {لِإِيلَافِ قُرَيْشٍ} [قريش: 1] قَالَ: أُمِرُوا أَنْ يَأْلَفُوا عِبَادَةَ رَبِّ هَذَا الْبَيْتِ، كَإِلْفِهِمْ رِحْلَةَ الشِّتَاءِ وَالصَّيْفِ

Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them – is reported to have said about the verse:  They were encouraged to worship the Lord of this House like that of their alliance of journeys of winter and summer.

 

Tafsir Al-Tabari (Tafsir Ibn Jareer / Jame’ al-Bayaan fi Taweel al-Quraan) of Imam Abu Ja’far Muhammad ibn Jareer al-Tabri t D. 310 A.H.

 

Tafsir al-Kabeer                                                                                                 التفسیر الکبیر

قَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ: أَرَادَ فَلْيُوَحِّدُوا رَبَّ هَذَا الْبَيْتِ لِأَنَّهُ هُوَ الَّذِي حَفِظَ الْبَيْتَ دُونَ الْأَوْثَانِ، وَلِأَنَّ التَّوْحِيدَ مِفْتَاحُ الْعِبَادَاتِ

Some scholars have said: “So they may believe in the Oneness of the Lord of this House, for it is He who protects the Holy Ka’bah, not the idols, and also, because believing in Allah’s Oneness is the key to devotion.”

 

Tafsir al-Kabeer (Mafateeh al-Ghaib) of Imam Fakhruddin Muhammad ibn Umar al-Raazi al-Shafe’i t D. 606 A.H.

 

Tafsir al-Qurtubi                                                                                                                         تفسیر القرطبی

أَمَرَهُمُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى بِعِبَادَتِهِ وَتَوْحِيدِهِ، لِأَجْلِ إِيلَافِهِمْ رِحْلَتَيْنِ.

Allah Almighty commanded them to worship Him and to believe in His Oneness, as per the alliance of their journeys.

Tafsir al-Durr al-Manthoor                                                                              تفسیر الدر المنثور

وَأخرج أَحْمد وَابْن أبي حَاتِم عَن أَسمَاء بنت يزِيد قَالَت: سَمِعت رَسُول الله صلى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسلم يَقُول: {لإِيلاف قُرَيْش إيلافهم رحْلَة الشتَاء والصيف} وَيحكم يَا قُرَيْش اعبدوا رب هَذَا الْبَيْت الَّذِي أطْعمهُم من جوع وآمنهم من خوف

Imam Ahmed and Ibn Abi Hatim narrated from Sayyidah Asma bint Yazeed – may Allah be pleased with them – who said:  I heard the Messenger of Allah – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – say, “Oh come on, Quraish:

اُعْبُدُوا رَبَّ هَـٰذَا الْبَيْتِ

Worship the Lord of this House.

الَّذِي أَطْعَمَهُم مِّن جُوعٍ وَآمَنَهُم مِّنْ خَوْفٍ ﴿٤﴾

The One Who gave them food in hunger and bestowed them safety from a great fear.
