فَجَعَلَهُمْ كَعَصْفٍ مَّأْكُولٍ ﴿٥﴾
So He made them like the leftover devoured leaves of farms?

Tafsir al-Tabari تفسیر الطبری
فَجَعَلَ اللَّهُ أَصْحَابَ الْفِيلِ كَزَرْعٍ أَكَلَتْهُ الدَّوَابُّ فَرَاثَتْهُ، فَيَبِسَ وَتَفَرَّقَتْ أَجْزَاؤُهُ
So, Allah Almighty made the people of elephant like the crops which was devoured by the predators, and then its dung dried and all its parts fell apart.

Tafsir Al-Tabari (Tafsir Ibn Jareer / Jame’ al-Bayaan fi Taweel al-Quraan) of Imam Abu Ja’far Muhammad ibn Jareer al-Tabri  D. 310 A.H.

Tafsir al-Qurtubi تفسیر القرطبی
وَقَالَ ابْنُ إِسْحَاقَ: لَمَّا رَدَّ اللَّهُ الْحَبَشَةَ عَنْ مَكَّةَ، عَظَّمَتِ الْعَرَبُ قُرَيْشًا وَقَالُوا: أَهْلُ اللَّهِ، قَاتَلَ عَنْهُمْ، وَكَفَاهُمْ مَئُونَةَ عَدُوِّهُمْ، فَكَانَ ذَلِكَ نِعْمَةٌ مِنَ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِمْ.
Sayyiduna Ibn Ishaq – may Allah be pleased with him – said: When Allah Almighty chased away the Abyssinians from Makkah Mukarramah, the Arabs honoured Quraish and said, “The people of Allah fought with them and Allah is Sufficient for them to overcome their enemy. It was Allah’s favour upon them.”

Tafsir al-Jalalain تفسیر الجلالین
{فَجَعَلَهُمْ كَعَصْفٍ مَأْكُول} كَوَرَقِ زَرْع أَكَلَتْهُ الدَّوَابّ وَدَاسَتْهُ وَأَفْنَتْهُ أَيْ أَهْلَكَهُمْ اللَّه تَعَالَى كُلّ وَاحِد بِحَجَرِهِ الْمَكْتُوب عَلَيْهِ اِسْمه وَهُوَ أَكْبَر مِنْ الْعَدَسَة وَأَصْغَر مِنْ الْحِمِّصَة يَخْرِق الْبَيْضَة وَالرَّجُل وَالْفِيل وَيَصِل إِلَى الْأَرْض
وَكَانَ هَذَا عَام مولد النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم

i.e. like the leaves of crops which have been consumed, trampled and destroyed by animals. Allah destroyed each one of them with his stone, inscribed with his name, larger than a lentil but smaller than a chick-pea, able to pierce through an egg, a man, or an elephant and go through the ground.
This took place during the year in which the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – was born.

Tafsir al-Jalalain of Imam Jalaaluddin Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Mahalli al-Shafe’i  D. 864 A.H. and Imam Jalaaluddin Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr al-Suyooti al-Shafe’i  D. 911 A.H.

Tafsir al-Durr al-Manthoor تفسیر الدر المنثور
وَأخرج عبد بن حميد وَالْبَيْهَقِيّ فِي الدَّلَائِل عَن ابْن أَبْزي قَالَ: ولد النَّبِي صلى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسلم عَام الْفِيل
Imam ‘Abd ibn Hameed, Baihaqi in Dalaail mentioned from Ibn Abza, he said: The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – was born in the year in which the incident of the people of elephant took place.
