وَأَرْسَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ طَيْرًا أَبَابِيلَ ﴿٣﴾

And send flocks of birds upon them,

 

Tafsir al-Tabari                                                             تفسیر الطبری

وَأَرْسَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ طَيْرًا مُتَفَرِّقَةً، يَتَّبِعُ بَعْضُهَا بَعْضًا مِنْ نَوَاحٍ شَتَّى؛ وَهِيَ جِمَاعٌ لَا وَاحِدَ لَهَا، مِثْلُ الشَّمَاطِيطِ وَالْعَبَادِيدِ وَنَحْوِ ذَلِكَ.

From the witches who blow into the knots of the string at the time when they do witchcraft on it.

 

Tafsir Al-Tabari (Tafsir Ibn Jareer / Jame’ al-Bayaan fi Taweel al-Quraan) of Imam Abu Ja’far Muhammad ibn Jareer al-Tabri t D. 310 A.H.

 

Tafsir al-Baghawi                                                        تفسیر البغوی

كَثِيرَةً مُتَفَرِّقَةً يَتْبَعُ بَعْضُهَا بَعْضًا.

A lot of different species of birds, one after the other.

 

قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ: كَانَتْ طَيْرًا لَهَا خَرَاطِيمُ كَخَرَاطِيمِ الطَّيْرِ وَأَكُفٌّ كَأَكُفِّ الْكِلَابِ.

Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them – said:  Those birds had beaks like that of some birds and claws like dogs’ paws.

 

وَقَالَ عِكْرِمَةُ: لَهَا رُؤُوسٌ كَرُؤُوسِ السِّبَاعِ.

Sayyiduna ‘Ikramah – may Allah be pleased with him – said:  Their heads were like the heads of predators.

 

قَالَ الرَّبِيعُ: لَهَا أَنْيَابٌ كَأَنْيَابِ السِّبَاعِ.

Sayyiduna Rabee’ – may Allah be pleased with him – said:  Their teeth were like the teeth of predators.

 

وقال سعيد بن جبير: [طير] [3] خُضْرٌ لَهَا مَنَاقِيرُ صُفْرٌ.

Sayyiduna Sa’eed ibn Jubair – may Allah be pleased with him – said:  They were green birds with yellow beaks.

 

وَقَالَ قَتَادَةُ: طَيْرٌ سُودٌ جَاءَتْ مِنْ قَبْلِ الْبَحْرِ فَوْجًا فَوْجًا مَعَ كُلِّ طَائِرٍ ثَلَاثَةُ أَحْجَارٍ حَجَرَانِ فِي رِجْلَيْهِ وَحَجَرٌ فِي مِنْقَارِهِ لَا تُصِيبُ شَيْئًا إِلَّا هَشَمَتْهُ.

Sayyiduna Qatadah – may Allah be pleased with him – said:  They were black birds that came from the direction of the ocean in the form of army troops.  Each bird carried three stones; two in their claws and one in their beaks, and anything it touched got perished.

 

Tafsir al-Baghawi (Ma’aalim al-Tanzeel) of Muhiyy al-Sunnah Imam Abu Muhammad Al-Husain ibn Mas’ood al-Baghwi al-Shafe’I t D. 510 A.H.

 

Tafsir al-Kabeer                                                                                                 التفسیر الکبیر

أَمَّا أَهْلُ اللُّغَةِ قَالَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ: أَبَابِيلُ جَمَاعَةٌ فِي تَفْرِقَةٍ

According to linguists, as Abu ‘Ubaidah said:  Ababeel is the group of birds from a specific species.

 

رَوَى ابْنُ سِيرِينَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: كَانَتْ طَيْرًا لَهَا خَرَاطِيمُ كَخَرَاطِيمِ الْفِيلِ وَأَكُفٌّ كَأَكُفِّ الْكِلَابِ

Sayyiduna Ibn Seereen narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them, he said:  Those birds had beaks like the trunks of elephant and claws like dogs’ paws.

 

Tafsir al-Kabeer (Mafateeh al-Ghaib) of Imam Fakhruddin Muhammad ibn Umar al-Raazi al-Shafe’i t D. 606 A.H.

 

Tafsir al-Qurtubi                                                                                                                         تفسیر القرطبی

قَالَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ جُبَيْرٍ: كَانَتْ طَيْرًا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ لَمْ يُرَ قَبْلَهَا، وَلَا بَعْدَهَا مِثْلُهَا.

Sayyiduna Sa’eed ibn Jubair – may Allah be pleased with him – said:  Those birds descended from the sky, the likes of which were never seen before or after.

 

عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: [إِنَّهَا طَيْرٌ بَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ تُعَشِّشُ وَتُفَرِّخُ [.

Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them – reported that he heard the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – say:  Those birds made their nests and bore their young ones between the earth and sky.”
