Tafsir al-Tabari

They were the polytheists of his nation who extended an offer to the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – that they would worship Allah Almighty for a year, and in return, the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – should worship their gods for a year.  It was then Allah Almighty revealed it in their response: “Say” i.e. O Muhammad, to these polytheists who ask you to worship their gods for a year in return of their worship of your Allah for a year, “O disbelievers” in Allah.

Tafsir al-Baghawi

It was revealed about a group of Quraish; among them are Al-Harith ibn Qais al-Sahmi, Al-‘Aas ibn Waail, Al-Waleed ibn al-Mugheerah, Al-Aswad ibn ‘Abd Yaghooth, Aswad ibn al-Matlab ibn Asad and Umaiyah ibn Khalaf, who said, “O Muhammad, join us in our religion and we will follow your religion and include you in all our endeavors.  You would worship our gods for a year and we will worship your Allah for a year.  So, if there is good in what you have brought, we would have become part of it and we would have reaped our share from it, and if there is good in our religion then you would have benefitted from it.  The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – said, “Allah forbid! that I associate any partner with Allah.”  They said, “Then (at least) accept some of our gods and we would approve you and worship your Allah.”  He said, “I will wait for what is to come from my Lord.”  Allah Almighty then revealed Surah Al-Kafiroon.  The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – headed towards the Sacred Mosque the next day and there was this group of Quraish.  He stood by them and recited it till the end of the Surah.  They lost hope in him, and hurt him and his companions.
