Tafsir al-Qurtubi

His wife was Umm Jameel.  Sayyiduna Ibn al-‘Arabi – may Allah be pleased with him – said, “A one-eyed woman is the mother of ugliness, and she was one-eyed.”

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, Mujahid and Qatadah – may Allah be pleased with them – said, “She used carry tales between people.”

It is proven from the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him, he said, “No gossiper will enter paradise.”

He – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him, “A two-faced person will not look good by Allah.”

The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – has stated, “The evil amongst people is the two-faced person who meets someone with face and the other with other face.”

Sayyiduna Ka’b al-Ahbar – may Allah be pleased with him – said:  Once Bani Isarael were affected by drought.  Sayyiduna Moosa – peace be upon him – took them out three times to make Du’a for rain but it did not rain.  Sayyiduna Moosa – peace be upon him – said, “O Allah, they are your servants.”  Allah Almighty sent revelation to Sayyiduna Moosa – peace be upon him, “I will not answer your or companions’ prayers, for one of them is a gossiper and is adamant at it.”  Sayyiduna Moosa – peace be upon him – said, “Who is it, my Lord?  We will expel him from amongst ourselves.”  “O Moosa, how can I command you to abstain from gossiping and get involved in it Myself?”  It rained when they all repented from it.

There is no difference of opinion that backbiting/gossiping is one of major sins.
