وَّ امْرَاَتُہٗ ؕ حَمَّالَۃَ الْحَطَبِ ۚ﴿۴﴾
And so will his wife; carrying a bundle of firewood on her head.
Tafsir al-Tabari تفسیر الطبری
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، فِي قَوْلِهِ: {وَامْرَأَتُهُ حَمَّالَةَ الْحَطَبِ} [المسد: 4] قَالَ: كَانَتْ تَحْمِلُ الشَّوْكَ، فَتَطْرَحُهُ عَلَى طَرِيقِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، لِيَعْقِرَهُ وَأَصْحَابَهُ
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas – may Allah be pleased with him – is reported to have commented on the verse: She used to bring thorns and scatter them in the way of the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – to despise him and his companions.
عَنْ قَتَادَةَ: {وَامْرَأَتُهُ حَمَّالَةَ الْحَطَبِ} [المسد: 4] قَالَ: «كَانَتْ تَحْطِبُ الْكَلَامَ، وَتَمْشِي بِالنَّمِيمَةِ»
Sayyiduna Qatadah – may Allah be pleased with him – said about the verse, “She used to carry tales and gossip.”

Tafsir al-Baghawi تفسیر البغوی
{وَامْرَأَتُهُ} أُمُّ جَمِيلٍ بِنْتُ حَرْبِ بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ أُخْتُ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ {حَمَّالَةَ الْحَطَبِ}
قَالَ ابْنُ زَيْدٍ وَالضَّحَّاكُ: كَانَتْ تَحْمِلُ الشَّوْكَ وَالْعَضَاةَ فَتَطْرَحُهُ فِي طَرِيقِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَأَصْحَابِهُ لِتَعْقِرَهُمْ
وَهِيَ رِوَايَةُ عَطِيَّةَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ.
Umm Jameel bint Umayyah, the sister of Sayyiduna Abu Sufyan – may Allah be pleased with him – was his wife.
She would carry a bundle of firewood on her head.
Sayyiduna Ibn Zaid and Dhahhak – may Allah be pleased with them – said, “She used to scatter thorns in the way of the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – to despise him and his companions.”
It’s the narration of ‘Atiyyah from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them.
Tafsir al-Baghawi (Ma’aalim al-Tanzeel) of Muhiyy al-Sunnah Imam Abu Muhammad Al-Husain ibn Mas’ood al-Baghwi al-Shafe’I t D. 510 A.H.
Tafsir al-Qurtubi تفسیر القرطبی
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: وَامْرَأَتُهُ أُمُّ جَمِيلٍ. وَقَالَ ابْنُ الْعَرَبِيِّ: الْعَوْرَاءُ أُمُّ قَبِيحٍ، وَكَانَتْ عَوْرَاءَ.
His wife was Umm Jameel. Sayyiduna Ibn al-‘Arabi – may Allah be pleased with him – said, “A one-eyed woman is the mother of ugliness, and she was one-eyed.”
قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ وَمُجَاهِدٌ وَقَتَادَةُ وَالسُّدِّيُّ: كَانَتْ تَمْشِي بِالنَّمِيمَةِ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, Mujahid and Qatadah – may Allah be pleased with them – said, “She used carry tales among people.”
وَثَبَتَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: [لَا يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ نَمَّامٌ [
It is stated by the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him, “No gossiper will enter paradise.”
وَقَالَ: [ذُو الْوَجْهَيْنِ لَا يَكُونُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ وَجِيهًا [.
He – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him, has stated, “A two-faced person will not look good by Allah.”
وَقَالَ عَلَيْهِ الصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ: [مِنْ شَرِّ النَّاسِ ذُو الْوَجْهَيْنِ الَّذِي يَأْتِي هَؤُلَاءِ بِوَجْهٍ، وَهَؤُلَاءِ بِوَجْهٍ [
The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – has stated, “The evil amongst people is the two-faced person who meets someone with face and the other with other face.”
وَقَالَ كَعْبُ الْأَحْبَارِ: أَصَابَ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ قَحْطٌ، فَخَرَجَ بِهِمْ مُوسَى عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ ثلاث مرات يستسقون فلم يسقوا فَقَالَ مُوسَى: [إِلَهِي عِبَادَكَ [فَأَوْحَى اللَّهُ إِلَيْهِ: [إِنِّي لَا أَسْتَجِيبُ لَكَ وَلَا لِمَنْ مَعَكَ لِأَنَّ فِيهِمْ رَجُلًا نَمَّامًا، قَدْ أَصَرَّ عَلَى النَّمِيمَةِ [. فَقَالَ مُوسَى: [يَا رَبِّ مَنْ هُوَ حَتَّى نُخْرِجَهُ مِنْ بَيْنِنَا [؟ فَقَالَ: [يَا مُوسَى أَنْهَاكَ عَنِ النَّمِيمَةِ وَأَكُونُ نَمَّامًا [قَالَ: فَتَابُوا بِأَجْمَعِهِمْ، فَسُقُوا.
Sayyiduna Ka’b al-Ahbar – may Allah be pleased with him – said: Once Bani Isarael were affected by drought. Sayyiduna Moosa – peace be upon him – took them out three times to make Du’a for rain but it did not rain. Sayyiduna Moosa – peace be upon him – said, “O Allah, they are your servants.” Allah Almighty sent revelation to Sayyiduna Moosa – peace be upon him, “I will not answer your or your companions’ prayers, for one of them is a gossiper and is adamant at it.” Sayyiduna Moosa – peace be upon him – said, “Who is it, my Lord? We will expel him from our midst.” “O Moosa, how can I command you to abstain from gossiping and get involved in it Myself?” It rained when they all repented from it.
وَالنَّمِيمَةُ مِنَ الْكَبَائِرِ، لَا خِلَافَ فِي ذَلِكَ
There is no difference of opinion that backbiting/gossiping is one of major sins.
وَقَالَ قَتَادَةُ وَغَيْرُهُ: كَانَتْ تُعَيِّرُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بالفقر.
Sayyiduna Qatadah and others – may Allah be pleased with them – said, “She used to humiliate the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – on poverty.”
قَالَ ابْنُ زَيْدٍ وَالضَّحَّاكُ: كَانَتْ تَحْمِلُ الْعِضَاهَ وَالشَّوْكَ، فَتَطْرَحهُ بِاللَّيْلِ عَلَى طَرِيقِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَصْحَابِه
Sayyiduna Ibn Zaid and Dhahhak – may Allah be pleased with them – said, “She used to scatter shrubs and thorns in the way of the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – and his companions during the night.”

Tafsir al-Nasafi تفسیر النسفی
{وامرأته} هي أم جميل بنت حرب أخت أبي سفيان {حَمَّالَةَ الحطب} كانت تحمل حزمة من الشوك والحسك فتنثرها بالليل في طريق رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم
وقيل كانت تمشي بالنميمة فتشعل نار العداوة بين الناس
“And His wife” i.e. Umm Jameel bint Harb, the sister of Sayyiduna Abu Sufyan – may Allah be pleased with him. She used to bundle thorns and branches and scatter them in the way of the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – during the night.
It is also said that she used to carry tales and cause fights between people
