His wealth did not benefit him in the least, nor did whatever he earned.

Tafsir al-Baghawi

Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ood – may Allah be pleased with him – said:  When the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – called his kinsmen towards Allah Almighty, Abu Lahad said, “If what my nephew says is true then I will pay for my wealth and children.”  Allah Almighty then revealed:

His wealth did not benefit him in the least

(Lahab 111, Verse 2)

i.e. none of this will benefit him.

It is also said that it means what could benefit him from his wealth?! i.e. His wealth and cattle will not be able to defend him from Allah’s punishment.

Nor did whatever he earned.

(Lahab 111, Verse 2)

i.e. his children, for they are a man’s achievements; as it is mentioned in Hadeeth:

The purest is what you eat from your own earnings, and indeed, one’s children are his achievements.

Tafsir al-Baghawi (Ma’aalim al-Tanzeel) of Muhiyy al-Sunnah Imam Abu Muhammad Al-Husain ibn Mas’ood al-Baghwi al-Shafe’I t D. 510 A.H.

Tafsir al-Qurtubi

i.e. his entire wealth will not be able to defend him from Allah’s punishment nor will his status he has earned.

Sayyidah Ayesha – may Allah be pleased with her – is reported to have said:  The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – has stated, “The purest is what you eat from your own earnings, and indeed, one’s children one’s achievements.”

(Sunan Abi Dawood)

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas – may Allah be pleased with him – is reported to have said:  When the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – warned his kinsmen about Jahannam, Abu Lahab said, “If what my nephew says is true then I will pay for my wealth and children.”  Allah Almighty then revealed this verse.

Tafsir Rooh al-Bayaan

The daughter of the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peacea dn blessings upon him – was married to ‘Utabah, the son of Abu Lahab.  When he was leaving for Al-Sham, he said, “I shall visit Muhammad (may Allah send peace and blessings upon him) and reprimand him.”  He came and said, “O Muhammad, I do not believe in:

By the lovely shining star Muhammad, when he descended from the Ascension (Meraj).

(Al-Najm 53, Verse 1)

And

Then that splendid sight drew nearer, then he came close well.”

(Al-Najm 53, Verse 8)

He then spat towards the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – then divorced his daughter and brought her back to him.  The Holy Prophet said, “O Allah, appoint one of Your dogs upon him.”

‘Utabah went back to his house and narrated the whole incident to Abu Lahab.  After that, Abu Lahab and his son left for Al-Sham in a caravan.  They stayed for the night on the way.  While they stayed there, a monk called from the church to watch out for fierce animals here during the night.

Abu Lahab said when he heard the monk, “O people of Quraish, help me, I fear due to Muhammad’s curse on my son.”

Upon his request, the people of caravan brought all the camels and gathered them around ‘Utabah and kept him safe from all sides.  A lion came in the night and headed towards the caravan.  It sniffed each one and moved forward until it reached ‘Utabah and killed him.

After the battle of Badr, Abu Lahab died within 7 days due to blisters that appeared on his body.  They were tiny blisters and it is a type of plague and generally does not spare its victims alive.  After he died, the family members would not touch him fearing the contagious nature of the disease.  The Arabs considered it as plague.  He lied in the house without anyone to care for him until it started to create bad odour.  The family members hired some workers who threw him in a trench outside.  So, it happened exactly as the Holy Quran had foretold.
