Among the jinns and men.

Tafsir al-Kabeer

As if He is saying that the one who instils evil thoughts and stays hidden can sometimes be one of the jinns and sometimes it can be a human, as the Almighty has stated:

Devils from amongst men and jinn.

(Al-An’aam 6, Verse 112)

And just as the satan jinn sometimes instils evil thoughts and then hides the next moment, the satanic human also behaves in the similar manner.

Tafsir al-Kabeer (Mafateeh al-Ghaib) of Imam Fakhruddin Muhammad ibn Umar al-Raazi al-Shafe’i t D. 606 A.H.

Tafsir al-Qurtubi

He stated that the one who instils evil thoughts can sometimes be from amongst the humans.

Sayyiduna Hasan – may Allah be pleased with him – said, “They both are satans; as for the satan of the jinns, so he instils evil thoughts in people’s hearts and the satan of humans, he comes apparently.”

Sayyiduna Qatadah – may Allah be pleased with him – said, “Indeed there are satans among the jinns as well as there are satans among the humans, so seek Allah’s refuge from the satans among the jinns and humans.”

And it has been narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dhar – may Allah be pleased with him – that he said to a man: “Have you sought refuge in Allah from the satans among the humans or from the satans among the jinns?”  “Yes” he replied “Due to Allah’s command:

And in like manner We have made for every prophet an enemy, devils from among men and jinn.”

(Al-An’aam 6, Verse 112)

Tafsir Qurtubi (Al-Jame’ Li Ahkaam al-Quran) Imam Shamsuddin Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Qurtubi t D. 671 A.H.

Tafsir al-Nasafi

“Among the jinns and men” is an elaboration of “the one who instils evil thoughts” that the satan is of two types; the jinn and the human, as the Almighty has declared:

Devils from amongst men and jinn.

(Al-An’aam 6, Verse 112)

Tafsir al-Nasafi (Madarik al-Tanzeel) of Imam Abul Barakaat Abdullah ibn Ahmed al-Nasafi t D. 710 A.H.

Tafsir al-Jalalain

“Among the jinns and men” is an elaboration of the satan who instils evil thoughts that the satan is among the jinns and the humans, as the Almighty has declared:

Devils from amongst men and jinn.

(Al-An’aam 6, Verse 112)

Tafsir al-Jalalain of Imam Jalaaluddin Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Mahalli al-Shafe’i t D. 864 A.H. and Imam Jalaaluddin Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr al-Suyooti al-Shafe’i t D. 911 A.H.

Tafsir al-Durr al-Manthoor

وَأخرج ابْن الْمُنْذر عَن ابْن جريج فِي قَوْله: {من الْجنَّة وَالنَّاس} قَالَ: هما وسواسان فوسواس من الْجنَّة وَهُوَ الْجِنّ ووسواس نفس الإِنسان فَهُوَ قَوْله: {وَالنَّاس}

Sayydiuna Ibn al-Mundhir has mentioned from Sayyiduna Ibn Juraij – may Allah be pleased with them – concerning Allah’s words “Among the jinns and men”: “They both are Waswaas.  The Waswaas among the jinns is the jinn itself and the waswaas among men is the human-self, hence Allah’s words, ‘And among men’.”

Sayydiuna Abd al-Razzaq and Ibn al-Mundhir have narrated from Sayyiduna Qatadah – may Allah be pleased with them – concerning Allah’s words “Among the jinns and men”: “Indeed, there are satans among people, so we seek refuge in Allah from the satans among humans and jinns.”
