Tafsir al-Qurtubi

Sayyiduna Muqatil – may Allah be pleased with him – said, “Satan is in the form of a pig.  It travels within the human body through blood streams. Allah Almighty has appointed him on this, and this is the objective of Allah’s words “Those who instill evil thoughts into the hearts of people.”

It has been mentioned in the authentic narration from the beloved Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – that the satan travels within the human body through blood streams.  This Hadeeth verifies the statement of Sayyiduna Muqatil – may Allah be pleased with him.

Sayyiduna Shahr ibn Haushab narrated that from Sayyiduna Abu Tha’lebah al-Khushni  – may Allah be pleased with them – who said, “I requested Allah to show me the satan along with its station in the human body, and then I saw him with his hands in the human hands and his feet in the human feet, and his pathway into the human body.  His nose is like that of a dog’s.  When one remembers Allah, he hides and retreats and when one stops remembering Allah he gets hold of his heart.”

According to the narration of Abu Tha’lebah, the satan is spread throughout the human body and it has its organs spread in each human organ.

It has been narrated from Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman ibn Aswad and another Tabe’i – may Allah be pleased with them – when they had grown old, “I am not guaranteed to abstain from adultery, and I fear that the satan may enter his male organ and peg it.”  This statement should come to you as a warning that the satan is spread all over in the human body.  This is the meaning of Sayyiduna Muqatil’s – may Allah be pleased with him – statement.

His Waswasah is a call in the form of a stealth message towards his obedience, the meaning of which is perceived by the heart without being heard as a voice.
