Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ka’ab bin Maalik Radi Allahu ‘Anhuma used to take the hand of his father and lead him along because his father was blind. He narrates that he heard from Hadrat Sayyiduna Ka’ab bin Maalik Radi Allahu ‘Anhu who reveals the story of his staying behind during the Battle of Tabuk and that he never stayed behind for any battle except for Tabuk. Yes, he admits that he never took part in the Battle of Badr, however no one was admonished for not taking part in this battle. (abridged)

He goes on to narrate that, “During that period, unlike during other battles, I was much more powerful and much wealthier. By Allah! Before this, I never had two horses, unlike at that moment when I did have two horses (at my disposal). It was the behaviour of the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam that when he intended to go for battle, he never revealed this to anyone prior to the time. In this battle, it was extremely hot. The journey was long. It was desolate and on every portion of the way, enemies lay in hiding. (Suddenly), the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam revealed everything to the Muslims so that they could prepare for the journey and he also shown which direction they were going to leave. There was a large contingent of Muslims and there was no register on which these names were recorded. Those who wanted to stay away, they felt that they could absent themselves without anyone noticing until Divine Revelation revealed this action.

“The Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam departed at that time when shade and fruits were the favourite (items) of the day. (In other words, at the peak of Summer). I obviously also liked those things. The Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam had already prepared the people. I began to prepare myself in the morning. However, something or other came up and I kept convincing myself that I had the power to prepare at any time (and join the Muslims). This became (a delayed action of mine). One morning, the Muslims began to prepare in a hurry and all of a sudden they departed. I had still not prepared myself. The Muslims began to travel quiet fast. I wanted to go and meet them and if only I had done this, but it seems that this was not in my destiny. When the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam had left and I went outside and saw the people, I was disheartened to see that besides the hypocrites, the weak and the disabled, no one else could be seen.

“(It was said) that until the time the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam did not reach Tabuk, he did not mention me. However at Tabuk, he asked the Ashaab, ‘What happened to Ka’ab bin Maalik?’ One of the members of the Bani Salimah indicated (that perhaps the Dunya had forced him to stay back). However, Hadrat Sayyiduna Ma’az bin Jabal Radi Allahu ‘Anhu replied that, ‘We do not think anything bad about him (perhaps there was a specific reason why he remained behind).’

“The Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam remained silent. At that moment, he saw someone approaching dressed in white from the sandy area and declared, ‘Become Abu Khuthay mah’. When the person arrived at the camp, it was indeed Abu Khuthaymah Ansari Radi Allahu ‘Anhu. (This is that blessed companion who gave merely a small part of dates as charity which the hypocrites laughed about because that was the only thing he could afford).

Hadrat Ka’ab Radi Allahu ‘Anhu further narrates that, “When I heard that the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam was returning from Tabuk, my sadness and regret (of not joining them) again resurfaced). I also began to think of the reasons that could save me from this Prophetic wrath. I also discussed this with sensible members of my family and finally concluded and removed all false excuses from my heart. I also understood that I would not be able to save myself from this through false excuses. I then decided that only the truth would be spoken. The Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam arrived in the morning. It was his habit that after returning from a journey he went first to the Masjid, performed two rak’ah of Salaah and then sat (a few moments) among the people.

“According to his normal habit, he did the same thing. Then people who had remained behind (especially the hypocrites) then came forward and began to present their excuses one by one and they were about eighty of them. It appeared like he accepted their excuses and they retook their oath of allegiance. He also made Du’a for them and (advised them) that he had left their inner truth or reality with Allah azza wa jall (to decide). I then presented myself and he smiled at me very angrily and advised me to come forward. I then sat in front of him. He then asked me, ‘What had made you remain behind for this battle. Did you not purchase a horse?’ I replied, ‘O Prophet of Allah! If I was sitting in front of a wordily person, I would be able to save myself from his anger through some excuse because I have been given the power of speech. However, by Allah! If I give you a false excuse today and make you happy, then very soon Allah would make you angry with me (by revealing this). However, if I speak the truth now and even though at this moment you will display anger at me, however, I hope that Allah would make the result better. By Allah! There was no excuse for me. I was never a more stronger and wealthier person (than at this moment) when I remained behind.’

“The Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam replied, ‘This person has spoken the truth.’ He then declared, ‘Awake and wait until Allah has made a decision about you.’ I then arose and a few people from the Bani Salimah also joined me. (They kept telling me to go back and seek forgiveness because the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam was very forgiving and some even advised me to present some type of excuse which seemed justifiable). At the end, I asked them as to who else was also with me in this predicament. They replied that there were two other people. They also informed me that those two other people had behaved exactly like me (without giving any false excuses) and the same thing had been told to them which had been told to me. I was told that they were Muraarah bin Rabee Amri Radi Allahu ‘Anhu and Hilaal bin Umayyah Radi Allahu ‘Anhu. Both of them were extremely pious and had also taken part in the Battle of Badr and they were indeed great examples for me. When I heard of their actions, I (decided) to also remain firm in speaking the truth. Of all the people who had remained behind, the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam instructed that no one should speak to the three of us only. Thereafter, people remained aloof from us. In fact, the very earth where I lived began to look strange to me. We remained like this for fifty days. My two other companions remained in their houses weeping”. (Abridged)

Suffice to say that these three blessed companions remained in this condition for nearly fifty days. There was a complete social boycott against them. At one stage, their wives were not allowed to go near them except the wife of Hadrat Hilal Radi Allahu ‘Anhu. The reason that his wife was allowed to serve him was because he was quiet old.

Hadrat Ka’ab bin Malik Radi Allahu ‘Anhu admits at one stage, they even became tired with their own lives and the earth began to look extremely small and constricted. Even his own cousin refused to speak to him. However, it must be remembered that this was a great test for them based on two important things: (1) How genuine were they as Muslims. (2) Would they continue to speak the truth in such a dire condition?

It is the Infinite Mercy of Allah azza wa jall that all three of these companions passed this test and it will be forever remembered in history that their actual forgiveness has appeared in the Qur’an.

In Surah Taubah, verses 117 -119, Allah azza wa jall declares:

“No doubt, blessings of Allah turned towards the communicator of the unseen news, (the Holy Prophet) and those emigrants and helpers who sided with him in the hour of hardship. After it (was) that the hearts of some of them were nearly to be swerved aside. Then He turned towards them with blessing. Undoubtedly, to them He is Most Kind, Merciful. And to the three who were left behind, so much so that the earth being so vast became strait to them, and they became tired of their own lives, and they believed that there is no refuge from Allah but with Him. Then, He accepted their repentance that they might remain repenting. Undoubtedly, it is Allah Who is Relenting, the Merciful. O believers! Fear Allah and be with the truthful”.

Condemnation for those who speak lies!

Hadrat Sayyidun Ka’ab Radi Allahu ‘Anhu states that, “By Allah! From the time Allah azza wa jall has blessed me with the wealth of Islam, there has never being a greater reward. I spoke the truth to the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam and never spoke a lie. (If I had spoken a lie), I would also have been destroyed like others who had spoken lies. There is no doubt that Allah azza wa jall has certainly condemned those who speak lies and falsehood.”

As for those hypocrites who kept giving the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam false excuses and made up reasons for not joining the Muslims in Tabuk, many dire warnings were sent about them and what their final destination would be.

In Surah Taubah, verses 95,96, the Allah azza wa jall declares:

“Now they will swear by Allah before you (O Prophet), when you will return back to them in order that you may not mind of them, then yes, mind them not. They are wholly filthy and their destination is Hell a recompense what they used to earn. They swear before you that you may be pleased with them. But (even) if you are pleased with them (because that is what it outwardly seems to them), then no doubt, Allah will not be pleased with disobedient people”.

In one narration, it is reported that the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam departed for the expedition on a Thursday because he liked to travel on a Thursday. He also arrived at the time of the Chaast Salaah and before doing anything, he used to always perform two rak’ah of Nafil Salaah in the Masjid.

To give glad tidings or good news to anyone!

Allamah Badrudeen Aini Alaihir Rahmah explains that from this Hadith Shareef, a few important points are derived.

  1. Spoils of war is permissible for this Ummah.
  2. It is Mustahab that when one arrives from a journey, one should go to the local Masjid and first perform Nafil Salaah.
  3. It is Mustahab to give people glad tidings or good news when a certain calamity has gone away from their lives.
  4. It is also Mustahab to give charity when a calamity or some sadness disappears. (Umdatul Qari)

The amazing Imaan of the blessed companions

Explaining this Hadith Shareef, Mufti Shareeful Haq Amjadi Alaihir Rahmah explains that, “The expedition of Tabuk was against the greatest empire at that time which was the Roman Empire. This is the reason that everyone in Madina Shareef was encouraged to take part in this battle if they could afford to. It was also a time when the Muslims were very poor and the dates on various trees had also ripened.

“Before the battle, the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam had also asked for contribution and this is when Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Radi Allahu ‘Anhu gave his entire wealth and Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar Radi Allahu ‘Anhu gave half his wealth. However, the person who contributed the most in terms of equipment etc. in this battle was Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Uthman Ghani Radi Allahu ‘Anhu. Those who were able to take part and did not, were severely reprimanded and among the people from the area, more than eighty people did not take part.

“When the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam returned from this expedition, except for the three blessed companions, the rest of them gave false excuses and even took false oaths. The Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam did not do anything against them because it was clear that these were not genuine Muslims. They were in fact hypocrites. However, the three blessed companions admitted their mistake and for a while, they were put through a test. Finally, they were blessed with great news from Allah azza wa jall in that the Holy Qur’an actually confirms their Divine Forgiveness!” (Nuzhatul Qari)

Who is Hadrat Sayyiduna Ka’ab bin Maalik Radi Allahu ‘Anhu?

Hadrat Sayyiduna Ka’ab bin Maalik Radi Allahu ‘Anhu was from the Ansaar and from the Khazraji tribe. He joined the Muslims during the second meeting of Uqbah. There is dispute on whether he actually took part in the Battle of Badr or not and except for the expedition of Tabuk, he did take part in all the other battles. He was one of those who also used to write poetry in praise of the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam. Hadrat Sayyiduna Ka’ab bin Maalik Radi Allahu ‘Anhu lived until the age of seventy seven and passed away in the 50th year of Hijrah. In the final stages of his life, he also became blind. (Miraatul Manaajih)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Muraarah bin Rabee bin Aameri Radi Allahu ‘Anhu was from the Aameri off shoot and also took part in the Battle of Badr. (Al Usaabah)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Hilaal bin Ummayah Radi Allahu ‘Anhu was also one of those blessed people who took part in the Battle of Badr. Eminent companions such as Hadrat Sayyiduna Jaabir Radi Allahu ‘Anhu and Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas Radi Allahu ‘Anhuma have also narrated Hadith Shareef from him. He was considered as one of the oldest Muslims. (Usdul Ghaabah)

A Jannati action and an action which would lead you to Hell!

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Amar Radi Allahu ‘Anhu narrates that a person once approached the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam and asked, “O Prophet of Allah! What is a Jannati action?” The Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam replied, “To speak the truth. When a person speaks the truth, then he does good and when he does good, he is protected. And when he becomes protected (or protects himself against bad and evil deeds), he will enter Jannah”.

The person then inquired, “What is the action that would lead you into Hell?” The Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam replied, “To speak lies. When a person speaks lies, he commits sins and when he commits sins, then he becomes ungrateful and when he becomes ungrateful, he will enter Hell.” (Musnad Imam Ahmed)

A time to reflect

Hadrat Sayyiduna Hasan Basri Radi Allahu ‘Anhu explains, “These three (eminent companions) did not consume any Haraam wealth, they did not kill anyone unjustly and they did not spread mischief on the earth. Yet, still too, they had to face a great test. The earth in spite of its expansiveness seemed constrained to them. What will happen to that person who (is involved in) committing major shameful acts.” (Umdatul Qari)

Important points to bear in mind

  1. One should always endeavour to speak the truth even though one has to face major problems and trials. The reason is that truth achieves the Divine Pleasure of Allah azza wa jall and the pleasure of the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam.
  2. During periods of problems, trials and tribulation, one should continue to have patience because one day, Allah azza wa jall would certainly remove these forms of tests for ones Imaan.
  3. During times of problems, the Shaytaan appears using different forms of attack. At these times, one should be firm and steadfast. For the sake of protecting ones Imaan, one should display patience and tolerance. In Sha Allah, through this, one would be blessed with the unending pleasures of Jannah which would make the troubles of the world look very small.
  4. Our great predecessors never sold their Imaan for anything. They used to put up with the greatest of test and tribulations that a man can think of but never allowed themselves to leave the bless company of the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam or for one moment, they never dishonoured or disrespected him. They turned away the greatest worldly pleasures and wealth which came in front of them just for the sake of pleasing the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam.
  5. It is a Sunnah to travel on Thursday, to endeavour to return during the time of Chaast and to perform Nafil Salaah in the local Masjid on one’s return from any journey.
