Mufassireen have mentioned that Namrood Ibn Kan’an was an extremely barbaric ruler.  He was the first to wear crown on his head.  No king had done it prior to him.  He forcefully used to make people worship him.  There was a great number of fortune-tellers and astrologers in his assembly and he used to keep them close.

One night, Namrood saw a dream that a star appeared, in the light of which the sun, the moon and all the other stars went dim.  The fortune-tellers and astrologers interpreted the dream and told him, “A child will be born who will be the cause of the destruction of your kingdom.”  Hearing this Namrood became extremely restless and worried and summoned to kill all the newborn babies.  He also summoned to separate men from women, as a result of which, thousands of babies were killed but who can overrule the Will of Allah Almighty?!

Hazrat Ibraheem – peace be upon him – was born at that time and his mother had hidden him far away from the residential area in a cave surrounded by mountains due to the fear of the king.  His mother came to the cave every day to feed him.  Some Mufassireen have mentioned that he was nurtured in that cave for the period of seven years while some mentioned the duration to be 17 years.  (And Allah Almighty knows best).

People in that era generally used to worship the stars.  One night, when he saw the Venus or Jupiter and delivered to his nation a beautiful speech in order to propagate the true faith of Tauheed among them:

“O people!  Is this star my Lord?”  When the star disappeared, he said, “I do not like things that tend to disappeared.”  When the moon appeared, he said, “Is this my Lord?”  And when that too disappeared, he said, “Had my Lord not guided me I would also be one of those misguided people.”

When he saw the shining sun, he told them, “It’s the biggest of all of them.  Is this my Lord?”  When the sun had set, he said, “O my people!  I am free of all the things you associate with Allah Almighty as a partner, and I have submitted myself to the one who has created the earth and the skies.  I worship the only and One Lord, and I am not a polytheist.”

When his nation began to fight with him, he said to them, “Do you fight with me about my Lord?  He is the one who has guided me, and I am not afraid of your false gods.  Listen carefully!  You and your gods cannot cause me any harm without my Allah’s Will.  My Lord knows everything.  Will you not accept my advice?”

The Holy Quran has mentioned this incident in following words:

When the darkness of night came on him, he saw a star, said he, ‘you take this as my Lord! then when it set, said he, ‘I do not like the setting ones’.

Then when he saw the moon shining, said he, ‘you tell this my Lord, then when it set, said he, ‘if my Lord would not have guided me, I would also have been of the same who have gone astray.’

Then when he saw the sun shining, said he, you say this my Lord! This is biggest of all, then when it set, said he, ‘O people, I am quit of all those things which you associate with God.

I diverted my face towards Him who have made the heavens and earth, being of Him only and I am not of the polytheists.

(Al-An’aam 6, Verse 76-79)

Ponder and understand the depth and the effectiveness of the proofs in his speech which does not contain any indecent talks neither does it hurt anyone’s feelings.  He very beautifully expressed his motive in front of the disbelievers with proofs.  The harsh, violent and so-called dynamic lecturers of our time should take a lesson from it.  May Allah grant us the divine help! Ameen!
