وَعَنْ أُمِّ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ أُمِّ عَبْدِ اللهِ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: قَالَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ ﷺ، يَغْزُوْ جَيْشٌ اَلْكَعْبَةَ فإِذَا كَانُوْا بِبَيْدَاءَ مِنَ الأَرْضِ يُخْسَفُ بِأَوَّلِهِمْ اٰخِرِهِمْ۔ قَالَتْ: قلتُ، يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ! كَيْفَ يُخْسَفُ بِأوَّلِهِمْ وَاٰخِرِهِمْ وَفِيْهِمْ أسْوَاقُهُمْ وَمَنْ لَيْسَ مِنْهُمْ، قَالَ، يُخْسَفُ بِأَوَّلِهِمْ وَاٰخِرِهِمْ ثُمَّ يُبْعَثُوْنَ عَلٰى نِيَّاتِهِمْ۔ مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ. هٰذَا لَفْظُ الْبُخَارِيِّ

Abdullah’s mother, the mother of the believers, Hazrat ‘A’ishah (May Allah be pleased with her) is reported to have said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon Him) stated, “An army will attack on Ka’bah, and when it reaches Baidaa’, all of them will be swallowed by the earth.” She asked, “O Messenger of Allah! Why all of them, while some of them will be the shop-keepers and some will not even be a part of the army?” He answered, “Each and every one of them will be swallowed by the earth but they will be raised according to their intentions.”

Commentary

The Ill-effects Of Bad Company

‘Allamah Badruddeen ‘Aini says in ‘Umdatul Qaari:

“This Hadeeth reveals that this army will plan to demolish the Ka’bah and then they will be caused to sink at the place of Baidaa’[1] and they will not even approached the Ka’bah.”

Allamah Hafiz Ibn Hajar Al-‘Asqalaani states that a person namely Shuraid will be left alive throughout the whole army who will inform others about it.

(Fat’h Al-Baari 5/292)

Allamah Ibn Battaal states in the Commentary of Bukhari that ones who assists a nation on evil and increases them in number will be punished along with them provided that he was not forced into it.

Shaareh Bukhari Allamah Mahmood Ahmad Razvi states in Fuyooz Al-Baari:

“The objective of Hazrat ‘Aishah’s question was that the people who will come with the intention of conquering the Ka’bah is the criminals, but what about the ones that did not have this intention, but they just came to buy and sell, and what about the ones that were brought forcefully or as prisoners? He replied, “All will be caused to sink.” The meaning of it is that when the flood comes, it destroys all and sundry without putting a distinction between the good and evil; in the very manner, Allah’s wrath will encircle them also in its grip but everyone will be raised on his intention on the Day of Judgment.”

This discloses that the connection of the affairs of the hereafter is based on intentions. Whatever action that was performed in the world will be justified according to the intention with which it was performed; as it has been mentioned in connection with the army in the said Hadeeth that every one of them will be judged according to his intention, therefore the reformation of intention is of vital importance. It also reveals that the company of the sinners is a cause of destruction. When Allah’s wrath descends upon the sinners it encircles the dwellers accompanying them though they were not sinners, but the misfortune of the sins definitely affects them.

The Company Has a Great Impact

The Prophet (peace be upon Him) states:

مَثَلُ الْجَلِیْسِ الصَّالِحِ وَالْجَلِیْسِ السُّوْۤءِ کَمَثَلِ صَاحِبِ الْمِسْکِ وَکِیْرِ الْحَدَّادِ لَا یَعْدَمُکَ مِنْ صَاحِبِ الْمِسْکِ اِمَّا تَشْتَرِیْہِ اَوْ تَجِدَ رِیْحَہٗ وَکِیْرُ الْحَدَّادِ یُحْرِقُ بَدَنَکَ اَوْ ثَوْبَکَ اَوْ تَجِدُ مِنْہُ رِیْحًا خَبِیْثَۃً۞

“The example of a good or a bad company is of a musk merchant or the one who feeds the oven. It’s obvious that you will either buy the musk from the musk merchant or smell its fragrance while the one who feeds the oven will burn your body or garment, or you will get a bad odour from him.”

A sane person ought to seek the company of good people and reform his hereafter by having good intentions. The above-mentioned Hadeeth also teaches that Allah Almighty Himself protects His house. The history bears witness that whenever a malevolent person casted an evil glance towards the Haramain Shareefain (The blessed region that contains Makkah Mukarramah and Madinah Munawwarah) was made into an alarming example for the epoch. When Abraha, the cursed, intended to damage the holy Ka’bah years before the blessed birth of the merciful Prophet (peace be upon Him), then what befell him, one can estimate his alarming consequences from the following event:

Abraha and His Church

“In Ethiopian language, “Abraha” is spoken for a person with fair complexion. His filial appellation (Kunniyat) was Abu Yaksoon who was christian in religion. He was short-statured and possessed a fat embodiment. Once, he sent gifts and a letter of submissiveness to his king Asmaha Ibn Bahr Najjaashi for the compensation of one of his mistakes. The king became overjoyed and granted Abraha permanent governance of Yemen. Abraha was well-pleased upon this royal reward and then he gathered the members of the government, ministers and rulers and said, ‘The king is the possessor of mighty status. Forgiving me, he has favoured me abundantly; now, suggest to me some ideas as to what could be of a means of pleasing the king’s heart even more?’ ‘O our leader! The Ka’bah of the people of Arabia is taken in a very exceptionally holy and sacred spirit. The entire Arab comes to visit it and the sanctity and reverence of the people of Arabia is due to it while it’s merely a structure made of stones. You should construct a church in Yemen, in compliance with the King’s religion, which foundation would be of gold and silver and the walls decorated with pricey gems, and then the announcement would be made in different countries, especially in Arabia, that whoso will come to visit this church will be given gold and silver as gifts. People will gather to pay a visit from all the corners and will make Tawaaf of it and the king will be glorified in this manner and he will be well-pleased with you.’ They all replied after a consensual session. Abraha loved this evil suggestion. He constructed the church and conducted the proclamation of its visit in all countries. Hence, people from all different countries began to visit Yemen and Abraha gave them the expensive gifts.

Filth in the Church

People of Arabia were extremely disgusted by this corrupt strategy of Abraha. Hence, a man namely Zubair Ibn Badr, from the tribe of Bani Kinaanah, had initially started to stay in the church continuously and later, finding an opportunity he answered the call of nature within its premises then applied the filth onto its walls and escaped from there. This news spread in the neighbourhood like fire and people took a dislike to the Tawaaf and praying in this church. Abraha was furious with this and he took an oath to destroy the holy ka’bah. When he proceeded towards Makkah Mukarramah with his massive army which consisted of hundreds of elephants and the fronting elephant named Mahmood was very gigantic. When Hazrat Sayyiduna Abdul Muttalib came to know about the army of Abraha he offered him one-third of the wealth of Tihamah so that he may reconsider his evil objective and step back, but he refused. Upon approaching the boundaries of Ka’bah he captured all the animals of the people of Makkah Mukarramah through his man Aswad that contained 200 camels of Hazrat Abdul Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) which He had endowed for the pilgrims.

The Radiance of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon Him)

However, Hazrat Sayyiduna Abdul Muttalib went to Abraha. Informing Abraha of His arrival one of his ministers namely Saa’is Al-Feel said, ‘The Leader of Quraish and the leader of the Makkan caravans who is righteous in speech, kind in nature, possesses a pious, generous and authoritative personality has arrived. A light illuminates from him that leaves anyone awe-struck. (i.e. the light of the Prophet [peace be upon Him])’

Hearing this, Abraha immensely decorated his throne and sat there with great pride. He regarded sitting Him on his throne as an insult to his pride, but when He entered, looking at the gleam and shine of the light of the Prophet (peace be upon Him) on His forehead he involuntarily descended from his throne and sat Him on the throne and he himself sat with utmost respect towards the left and inquired about the reason for His arrival. ‘I came for my camels.’ He (may Allah be pleased with Him) replied. Abraha said, ‘I came to destroy the Ka’bah which is yours and your forefathers’ respected house. It’s surprising that you are not showing your concern to it at all, rather you ask for your camels.’ ‘I own the camels, thus I ask you for them only, and the Master of Ka’bah Himself will protect it as He shielded it before from Tubba’, Saif Ibn Zee Yazn and Kisra.’ He replied. Hearing this Abraha said in anger, ‘Return His camels, and now, I am going to see who can protect Ka’bah from me!’

Hazrat Abdul Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) returned with his camels and gathered Quraish, and then he advised Quraish to stay on the peaks and the valleys of the mountain. Hence, the Quraish did so. Hazrat Abdul Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) then made the following Du’a to Allah at the door of Ka’bah for its protection and returned to his tribe:

اِنَّ الْمَرْءَ یُحْمِیْ رَحْلَہٗ فَامْنَعْ حِلَالَکَ لَا یَغْلِبَنَّ صَلِیْبُھُمْ وَ مِحَالُھُمْ غَدْوًا مِّحَالَکَ

‘O Allah! Everyone is protective over his belongings. So you too, safeguard Your House so that their cross and power may not overcome You tomorrow.’

(Rooh Al-Bayaan 10/513-514)

The Respectful Elephant

Abraha commanded for the preparation of his army early in the morning and prepared the elephants but Mahmood, the elephant, did not get up. He would get up and walk when they turned him towards Yemen or any other direction, but when they turned him towards the Ka’bah he would sit down on the ground instead of walking ahead. Being frustrated Abraha got him drunk so that he may not be able to distinguish between the directions and begin to walk towards the direction of the holy Ka’bah, but despite being drunk he did not proceed in that direction. It is said that Nufail Ibn Habeed Khath’ami said grabbing the elephant’s ear:

اُبْرُکْ مَحْمُوْدُ وَارْجِعْ رَاشِدًا حَیْثُ جِئْتَ فَاِنَّکَ فِیْ بَلَدِ اللّٰہِ الْحَرَامِ

‘O Mahmood! Sit on your knees or take the straightway and return to where you have come from, for you are in Allah’s sacred city.’

Hearing this, the respectful elephant moved back and did not step forward towards the Ka’bah.

Hazrat Sayyiduna Abdul Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) was watching Abraha’s army from a mountain and it was then that Allah Almighty descended some black birds on them. Their beaks were red and their necks were green and long. Those birds would drop small pebbles, and whoever was struck by it would die immediately. The whole army was ruined in an instant.

The Beginning of Chickenpox Disease

Hazrat Sayyiduna Ikaramah (may Allah be pleased with him) stated that whoever those pebbles would struck got affected by chickenpox. The illness of chickenpox started off in this region of Arabia for the first time. The Glorious Quran has described the incident of “the people of elephant” in the following manner:

بِسْمِ اللہِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیۡمِ ﴿﴾

اَلَمْ تَرَ کَیۡفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّکَ بِاَصْحٰبِ الْفِیۡلِ ؕ﴿۱﴾ اَلَمْ یَجْعَلْ کَیۡدَہُمْ فِیۡ تَضْلِیۡلٍ ۙ﴿۲﴾ وَّ اَرْسَلَ عَلَیۡہِمْ طَیۡرًا اَبَابِیۡلَ ۙ﴿۳﴾ تَرْمِیۡہِمۡ بِحِجَارَۃٍ مِّنۡ سِجِّیۡلٍ ﴿۴﴾۪ۙ فَجَعَلَہُمْ کَعَصْفٍ مَّاۡکُوۡلٍ ﴿۵﴾

ALLAH in the name of, the Most Affectionate, the Merciful.

‘O beloved! Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with the men of the Elephant? Did He not cause their device to be ruined. And He sent against them flocks of birds. Striking them against stones of baked clay. And thus made them like broken straw eaten up.’

(Verse 1-5, Al-Feel)

The Exemplary End of Abraha and His Allies

When Abraha ran towards Yemen he was afflicted by a very filthy disease which caused his flesh to peel off so much so that by the time he reached San’a, he had become like a chicken, and then his chest burst open exposing his heart and he approached hell. Thereafter, his son Yaksoon took his place on the throne.

Seeing the birds, Abraha’s ally Abu Yaksoom ran towards Ethiopia. The birds followed him and he succeeded to approach Najjaashi and narrated the whole incident. A pebble fell on him as soon as he concluded the conversation and he died in an instant. Najjaashi had learnt an exemplary lesson by this incident. The love and pride of Quraish was instilled even more in the hearts of the people after the ruin of Abraha’s army.

Destruction of the Church

The Church that Abraha had constructed, spending a large sum of wealth for the purpose of deserting the holy Ka’bah, got deserted in such a manner that a large population of ferocious animals, snakes and Jinns inhabitated its surroundings and followed whoever would come to visit it. It continued in the same manner till the era of the first Abbasids Caliph Siffaah. When he came to know about the Abraha’s Church he sent his worker to Yemen who demolished the remainder building of the Church and collected a very large quantity of pricey gems, the bricks that were covered with gold and silver and some other expensive items. Even the name and existence of the church was forgotten after that.”

Dear Muslim brothers! You have noticed what happened to Abraha when he intended to damage the holy Ka’bah! What a shameful death he died and became an exemplary lesson for the people till Qiyaamah! Similarly, an army of Yazeed, the ill-fated, was also made into an exemplary lesson when it insulted the sanctity of the Haramain Shareefain.

The Exemplary End of Muslim Ibn ‘Uqbah Yazeedi

Yazeed had sent Muslim Ibn ‘Uqbah with an army of 12,000 or 20,000 soldiers to attack on Madinah Munawwarah and Makkah Mukarramah in the year 63 A.H. The ill-fated army caused such uproar; Allah may preserve and provide protection! They did bloodshed and destruction, robbed the houses and ill-treated in whichever way possible. 700 Sahaba (may Allah be pleased with them all) were martyred and the number of people killed exceeded 10,000 Muslims, including the Tabe’een (may Allah shower mercy upon them all). They captured the youth, and this was not the end, they didn’t even spare the holy and pious women and made them into the prey to their carnal cravings for three days. They ruined the sanctity of the holy tomb of the Prophet (peace be upon Him), tied their horses in Masjid Al-Nabawi Shareef and their urine and faeces splashed onto the pure pulpit. People were unable to perform Salah in Masjid Al-Nabawi Shareef for three days, only Hazrat Sa’eed Ibn Musayyib, who was from amongst the senior Tabe’een, was present there acting like an insane. The tyrant captured him too, and later freed him thinking of him to be an insane person, and then some of the soldiers captured a young man. When his old mother wept in front of Muslim Ibn ‘Uqbah, begging him to release the apple of her eyes, having called the young man he separated his head from his body and told his mother throwing the head towards his mother, “Do you not consider your life of a blessing that you came to release your child?”

There was one more person killed in the same manner, and then his mother Umm Yazeed Ibn Abdullah Ibn Rabee’ah took a vow, “If I have the power I shall burn Muslim Ibn ‘Uqbah dead or alive.” When that tyrant turned towards Makkah Mukarramah after doing bloodshed and riot in Madinah Munawwarah, so that he could kill Hazrat Abdullah Ibn Zubair and other Muslims there who were anti-Yazeed, he got fits on the way and died. Husain Ibn Numair was appointed as the commander of army on Yazeed’s command. The army moved forward after having Muslim Ibn ‘Uqbah buried. When that woman came to know about the death of Muslim Ibn ‘Uqbah she came to his grave with some men, so that she may burn him taking him out of the grave and fulfil her vow. Hence, when the grave was dug people saw a dangerous snake wrapped around his neck and that it has taken the bone of his nose in its mouth. Observing this fearsome scene they all began to escape and said to the woman, “Allah, the Vanquisher and Mighty, Himself has punished him and appointed the angel of punishment upon him. You should now leave him at last. “By Allah! I will definitely fulfil my vow and console my heart by burning him” said the woman. They helplessly said upon this reaction of the woman, “Okay then, we should take him out by the side of his feet.” When they removed the sand from that side there was another boa wrapped around his legs as well. The people told the woman to leave him, for this punishment is sufficient for him but she did not listen. She made Wudhu and performed two Rakats of Salah and prayed in the court of Allah Almighty in this manner, “O Lord! You are well aware that my rage on this tyrant is for your pleasure. Grant me the ability so that I may fulfil my vow and burn him.” Having made this du’a she struck onto the snake’s tale with a stick and it unleashed the neck and went away, and then she struck the second snake and it also went away. She then took out the dead body of Muslim Ibn ‘Uqbah out of the grave and burnt it.

سچ ہے کہ برے کام کا انجام برا ہے

It is true that the end of an evil action is bad.

Repent towards Allah! “I seek Allah’s forgiveness.”

محفوظ سدا رکھنا شہا بے ادبوں سے اور مجھ سے بھی سر زد نہ کبھی بے ادبی ہو

Always protect me from the disrespectful, O Master!

And may I also not commit disrespectfulness ever!

O Allah accept it through the dignity of the trustworthy Prophet (peace be upon Him and His Progeny)

The Qiyaamah Will Occur Just Upon Demolition Of The Holy Ka’bah

The Holy Ka’bah is a great sign from amongst the signs of Allah Almighty. The world will remain for as long as it exists, and when it will get demolished the world will be destroyed and the Qiyaamah will take place. An ill-fated black man will demolish the holy Ka’bah at the proximity of Qiyaamah after which the Qiyaamah will immediately take place.

The Ill-fated Ebony

The beloved Messenger of Allah, the possessor of the knowledge through His provision, has stated giving the news of unseen, “A black man with short calf will demolish the Ka’bah.” And in another narration, “As if I am observing it that he is black and has wide legs. He is uprooting and throwing the stones of the Ka’bah.”

It is mentioned in ‘Umdatul qaari, the commentary on Bukhari, “When the Quran will be raised up from the people’s hearts towards the end of time after the demise of Hazrat ‘Isa (peace be upon Him), this ill-fated black man will demolish the Ka’bah.”

The well renowned commentator of the holy Quran, Hakeemul Ummat Hazrat Mufti Mufti Ahmad Yaar Khan (may Allah reveal mercy upon Him) says interpreting this Hadeeth that the Prophet (peace be upon Him) states, “As if that scene is in front of me and I am looking at it that he is demolishing the Ka’bah and uprooting each and every stone of it. I am watching him uproot and the stones falling and hearing the sound.” It unfolds that the vision of the Prophet (peace be upon Him) is much more far-sighted than our imagination that it observes the events of the past and future.
